I think the argument is this - if you build a squad capable of competing high up in the league table - its also a squad capable of winning a Cup - but that takes a bit more luck/good fortune than a season-long competition.

The reality for us - we are very thin right now, and overplaying a few players to compensate - we should be considering the long-term ramifications of that course - and utilizing more of the fringe/Youth players in early Cup competitions.
I'm with what @Mr Pink just said. Yes, we're thin but let's not do 9/10 changes or anything along those lines. I don't think that benefits anyone properly. 2-3? Sure. But let's put out a pretty strong team

We just dont want 9/10 changes like the Fulham debacle.
That was a bit different , we had a disrupted pre-season , Ange did not have a good look at many of the squad in a competetive match and that was his only opportunity to give some of them a game

Strongest XI without taking risks, if that means a youngster or two starting then grand.

what I definitely want to see is some changes around the hour mark and some of the youngsters getting decent minutes, not just the final five of the match

Bentancur
Lo Celso
Donley

Kulusevski

It's funny that neither those that want to rest starters or those that want to go strong are including Hojbjerg.

The guy has been a MainStay for a long time and is a capable rotation option

Vicario (90)

Udogie (90)
Davies (90)
Royal (90)
Porro (90)

Bentancur (58)
Lo Celso (82)
Skipp (58)

Kulusevski (0)
Johnson (82)
Richy (82)

Likely to be the above. Minutes v Bournemouth in brackets - excluded added time from both halves.

🤷‍♂️ I included him in my XI

But, I also think he is off this window, and might not be risked. I would risk it, but I don't make those calls.

There's a reason Ange isn't playing him and that's the reason I'd leave him out.

Doing better as sub anyway, hasn't been good on games he has started under Ange, but some decent performances coming in from the bench

Again I understand that instinct but the league is more important and at this stage any more injuries to key players would be catastrophic to our season as a whole.

I get that people won't agree because of the desperation for a trophy but I think we need to look slightly longer term.

Apart from giving some key players a rest after a horribly busy December, it would also give us the chance to blood some younger players and give them some competitive match minutes.

I suspect Burnley will rest a few players as well so I think we should still have too much for them.

Plus we'd have the first teamers on the bench anyway if we needed them.

I don't agree due to the attitude and not desperation for a trophy. Not the wining mentality that we should have. A player may get injured and then they may not and get fucked in the game against manure.

We should play strongest team for each game. It is Jan and transfer window is open too!

There's some kamikaze selections going on here.
You can't play a less technical defence and then have a Skipp/PEH combo as there'd be a chance we'd struggle to advance the ball, remember how turgid Fulham was?
Likewise I wouldn't play Philips next to Dier and have Forster in goal, madness.

Vic
Porro Emerson Davies Udogie
Bentancur PEH
Johnson GLC Bryan
Richy
If we go up then bring on Kulu and some youth, play some keep ball and don't charge around like maniacs, manage the game.
The FA Cup 2024 please.

Forster - needs minutes for match sharpness.

Royal - give Porro a rest.
Phillips - opportunity to see what he can do against less taxing opposition.
Davies
Udogie - hopefully he can be rested after about 60

Bentancur - give him 45/60 then sub on Skipp.
Hojbjerg
Kulu

Johnson
Richie - hopefully he can be subbed off after about 60 and Donley/Scarlett given minutes.
Gil

God willing, VDV, Solomon to get minutes from the bench. GLC, Porro options if we're struggling.

Burnley have been playing some good football lately. Even when not winning, they have been very unlucky, their results for the past 5 games, are not a true indication. Like Bournemouth, Luton and Forest, on their day can beat anyone.

We kinda need a cup run. Ange has history of balancing both league and cups. I’m hoping we blood Philips but other than that, go full strength. Possibly Forster for Vic, but mainly because if Vic gets injured, we need Forster ready. But Vic has been soooo good it’s a risk.

We have 9 days until United afterwards, why wouldn't we be going as strong as possible? Absolute madness that people are suggesting rotating.

Strong team apart from resting Porro and we'll also have to manage Bentancur minutes.

Vicario
Emerson -- Dragusin/Phillips -- Davies -- Udogie

Bentancur
Lo Celso ----- PEH

Kulusevski ------------------ Johnson
Richarlison
Forster, Porro, Phillips/Dorrington, Dier, Skipp, Donley, Santiago, Bryan, Scarlett

Full strength with a GLC Bentancur Deki midfield. Go up 3-0 and then bring on Scarlett, Phillips, Donley and others for 15 minutes or so

Why does Forster need minutes for match sharpness? As long as Vic is fit he wont be required.
