All signs are pointing to Sanchez starting on Saturday and people should make a head start of coming to terms with that. I’m cool with it, but I do think Lenglet will play there over him in the future when Davies isn’t available.

It will be a toss up wether or not Conte thinks Perisic and Doherty are fit enough to start as well imo. So we could see Emerson and Sess on the wings.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if our new signings only made the bench for the first game.

Seen enough of Bentancur to want him to start vs Southampton.

Lloris
Sanchez -- Romero -- Davies
Royal -- PEH -- Bentancur -- Reguilon
Lucas -- Kane -- Son

Subs: Stevie, Kulusevski, Gollini, Doherty Rodon, Sessegnon, Winks

What a difference from my original post earlier this year.

Lloris
Romero -- Dier -- Davies/Lenglet
Doherty -- PEH -- Bentancur -- Perisic
Kulusevski -- Kane -- Son

Subs: Bissouma, Richarlison, Sess, Sanchez, Forster, Sarr, Royal, Lucas, Spence

For me, the team that finished last season earned the right to start this season, with probable exception to the full-back positions.

Hugo
Romero (pre injury was in great form)/Dier/Davies
?/PEH/Bentancur/?
Kulu/Kane/Son

Full backs much more dependent on fitness as some knocks/covid impacts recently. The start may be the only time this season where we have a run of only three games across three weekends. Feels important to start with continuity and build from last season and blood the new players in over the first month or so off the bench so they are ready to start from September when the games come thick and fast.

Can only see Conte debating over LCB for this weekend. Lenglet or Davies.

Doherty was better than Royal and playing on merit before the injury, Perisic will play over Sessegnon. Both can be changed now much easier with 5 subs, so Perisic and Doherty not being 100% fully fit means they will play.

Hojbjerg will play with Bentancur. Going to take something gigantic for Conte to shift away from Hojbjerg, not that he should but I think there is a portion of fans believing it will be Bissouma and Bentancur, also somehow Skipp being anything other than 4th choice to begin the season is fanciful.

Lloris
Romero Dier Lenglet
Doherty Bentancur Bissouma Perisic
Kulu Kane Son

Suspect it’ll be Sanchez & Hojbjerg though.

Here is who I think Conte will pick:

Lloris
Romero Dier Lenglet
Emerson Højbjerg Bentancur Perisic
Deki Kane Son

I never get these right though...

Desperate to just not see Sanchez and Emerson starting if I'm completely honest. Other than those positions the team probably picks itself.

I think
Lloris
Romero Dier Lenglet
Royal PEH Bentancur Sess
Kulu Kane Son

Then notwithstanding injuries/chasing the game I can see subs (in order) being
Both WB
Moura
Davies
Bissouma

Doherty & Perisic are must starts for me.

They offer so much more going forward & will be needed against Saints’ back 5.

Lenglet at LCB will also be preferable, due to his ability to play the ball forward & help us create more.

That's who I'd pick too. I hope Lenglet gets the nod because Soton will press like crazy and Lenglet can cope with that better than Davies or Sanchez.

Given Conte's comments post-Roma I wouldn't get your hopes up. He said Perisic not yet at his previous level and we need to be careful with Doherty coming back from a nasty injury.

I can see Royal & Sess starting but would hope the other 2 will get minutes.

On the plus side we should be a lot more settled than Southampton, especially if they are shifting to a new formation. Starting the season with 9 or 10 players from last season may not be a bad thing.

Agree with most of the wish-list starting line-ups:

Lloris; Doherty, Romero, Dier, Lenglet, Perisic; Bentancur, Bissouma; Kulusevski, Son, Kane.

I would strongly argue that's currently our strongest starting XI too, give or take a Ben Davies in sublime form.

Not sure if conte will throw in Lenglet and Perisic so soon, might give them a couple of weeks to get up to speed..

Lloris
Romero, Dier, Davies/Sanchez,
Doherty, Bentancur, PEH, Sess
Kulu, Kane, Son

I think there is a decent chance Perisic is held back in this one. With no Richarlison, Perisic and Lucas become the only real attacking threats for the bench - should it come to that.

Flip side is - play the best XI, get a good lead, and then use subs to rest people late.

I’d like to see

Lloris

Romero Dier Lenglet

Lucas Bissouma Bentancur Perisic

Deki Kane Son

It would be so deflating to see Sanchez at LCB and Emerson at RWB. Both are solid players and will play a part this season, but they are absolutely not what we need vs Soton at home

It's good that most positions pick themselves these days with just one or two exceptions. I think as far as Conte is concerned Davies will start not Lenglet Doherty on the right, Bisouma won't start this one and the rest you all know.
