Not necessarily. As mentioned previously in this thread, it would be useful to find players we can sign now but who could join us at a later date. Similar to what we did with Dele and Liverpool did with Keita. Here's what Pochettino said earlier this month:

"It’s so important today to identify your targets for the summer. If not and we wait until May and, before we sign, we sell, it’s so difficult to bring in players that can help.”

"The Dele signing is a very good example of the need to anticipate. We cannot be reactive because if we are, we are going to lose. If we are going to compete in the same period with City, United, Liverpool or Chelsea, then we are going to struggle to bring in the players we want. Maybe we need to sign the player in January and they can join in the summer."

“We tried to make early signings last summer but we could not, for different reasons. Now, we are going to try again to do things early. If we cannot again, I am going to say: ‘Come on, we could not again!’”

That's not my point.

hertyid: Coutinho gone to barca apparently
Also re earlier stories.
Toby is stalling. Who knows. A lot depends on us finishing top four and not just with him. Buyout clause is irrelevant.
More chance of me quitting Coys than Kane leaving in the summer. If he wanted to move or cared about money he’d have gone last summer.

It is baffling, never heard anything other than he loves it here and has no desire to leave whatsoever. The only current(regular starting) players I have any concern over leaving are Toby and Rose, and if I were Rose I'd be seriously thinking Yanited are not the attractive proposition they were at the start of the season.
Thanks for this mate and a happy new year to you!

You're not really addressing my point or countering any arguments at all which suggests that you know the answer to your own question but for some reason you're choosing to be difficult about it.

I know what Poch said...I don't disagree I'm merely offering you a perspective as to why we may not do any deals in Jan just like the majority of other teams and that is because players are overpriced and therefore l it doesn't make much business sense.
I think the reason activity is lower in Jan is due to CL eligibility. This reduces the pool of players the CL sides can look at. I stand by what I said previously, history is irrelevant if transfer inflation is rampant, each successive window will see prices higher than the prior one.

Also re Barkley if its not here already:

Given how much effort we put in with him over the summer, I’d be very surprised if we didn’t secure him this month.

Yeah and that's one of the reasons amongst many why players cost more in January.

I think new TV deal is announced in February could be a massive factor. Nobody forecast the last hike. If similar happened again it would mean with new stadium we could meet wage demands comfortably. However if the deal were to decrease who knows the ramifications of that. I doubt any new contracts won’t be done till the club know exactly what will be coming in next 3-4 years.

Says was very good today and caused City. massive problems all match. As we get healthy I think our biggest need is a winger / striker with quality and pace. Son is our only played in that area and we see how much his running can open up a defense.

Regarding the top four comment: you have to hold the players responsible for this if we fail to reach it. I know it’s the nature of the game, but they’ve put in some stinkers of performances that may well cost us CL qualification in the end. Too easy to look for a way out afterwards..

Zaha says he's staying.

Crystal Palace midfielder Wilfried Zaha speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think we were unlucky, but it was a good save from the goalkeeper. We take the point as we played well and I will take that and move onto the next game. We had a game plan to get in their faces and stop they playing as they pass the ball and run off the ball and we needed to follow the runners.

“It is massive for our confidence. I know how talented this team is and if we all do our jobs and all focus we can do the job on the pitch. We worked hard to earn the point we got. There is talent around the team and if we can get the three points we will do. We need to keep the play the same way as we played against Manchester City."

And when asked if he will be staying at Crystal Palace ahead of the January transfer window: "Yep, I am."

How does that work? He's only eligible to sign a pre contract with a non German club in January surely?

I think that rule only applies to England.
There's no such rule in Spain for instance. I'm not sure about Germany, but I would think there isn't either.
The news about Goretzka to Bayern were in the spanish paper Marca since this morning.

Ah right. I assumed it was Europe-wide.
