Today you get the answer to not one, but TWO cryptics!

Thank Christ for that - the cabbage thing has been absolute carnage this year - will go down in the annals of SC along with Blue & Yellow (not that that originated here of course).

Old Benjamin was a donkey in animal farm. Not sure where that might take us but I'm not sure I want to know either.
He was and he got sold to the knackers yard when he got too old to work. I think he was eventually used for glue amongst other things. A perturbing potential interpretation!

His alternative seems to be Liverpool, who struggle with their annual ambition of finishing above us, so not so sure we're such a bad option considering he would be given a key role with us (rather than playing in a similar position to the current L'pool captain)

Only because that's what we've seen in the media so far.

If it's true that his agent randomly offered him to us, or at least made us aware that he might be available, then it's clear he'll have been offered to several other clubs as well and by now it'll be well known he might be available.

I'm not really referring to Liverpool, there will be bigger and better clubs than both of us sniffing around him in sure.

It could take us to a pessimistic but philosophical (maybe) guess....

Old Benjamin the Donkey said:
When asked whether he was not happier now that Jones was gone, he would say only "Donkeys live a long time. None of you has ever seen a dead donkey," and the others had to be content with this cryptic answer.

The meaning of this passage was that things never change, some of us just haven't been around long enough to see a full cycle of the same old event. We've been told all summer that we're not going to sign any big names, but everyone keeps expecting them. Trix tried to tell us, but we just don't listen....

(not a serious guess, btw ;))

Works it out, as in actually works it out.

*and before you all start trying to work out how Rodriguez fits...... He doesn't.

I did sort of work out how he fits:

Dr Ross = George Clooney
Clooney = Clue - Knee
Now fixed = Rodriguez

Obviously not right though!

Could it be something to do with some team or someone (Poor Old Benjamin ) not listening to our offer, but by throwing in Townsend we are closer to agreement...???

Out of interest, @Trix, is the cryptic actually set using the same construction rules as a cryptic clue would be?

For clarity, in terms of a crossword cryptic, the Setter would define a cryptic comprising of a singular-word definition (which could be a single-word clue), word-play and then some fillers.
