JD may be out for some time, so the need for some more pace upfront is now even more pressing.

It looks like Ashley Young is going to be 'rested' for tonights Euro game. I think that would stop him from being cup tied and so open the door a bit further for us.

He'd only be cuptied for the Europa league anyway, which hopefully we'll avoid, but that's still interesting...

This would only mean something to us if we don't quliafy for the CL. Something I would prefer not to think about right now.

Onwards and upwards.

That said, Young would be a good signing - not that we really need him, but he would add much-needed pace. Striker first please.

Let's face it, our strikers all have their drawbacks & crapness, but their still better than this quartet: Pav, Gio, Bent, Erasure Campbell.

If we end up with Pav, JD, Keano & Crouch until January then so be it.

agree completley. Although they may not be "on fire" 2 games into the season, you will be hard pressed to find a better quartet of attacking talent in any premier league side. All have pros and cons. A lovely shiney new number 9 would be great, as long as its an upgrade on what we have, not just a signing for the sake of making a signing.. but if we keep the current 4, no problems for me.

I believe not. According to the official UEFA regulations a player only avoids being cuptied if their side is knocked out in the first, second or third qualifying round, despite other reports saying that it is 'preliminary rounds'.

IOMLS, you know I only read instructions in case of emergency.

I think you're right. Pretty sure UEFA distinguish between the qualifying rounds and the play-off round in their cup tie regs.

Basically, as far as UEFA are concerned, the play-off round seems to be the start of the Champions League 'proper'. Hence why it's not called the fourth qualifying round.

FROM POTL ON COYS:

Just thought I would give you a few bits as we near the end of the transfer window. I see many stories and info passed on and comment on some of it, but not all. Here are a few bits to keep your eye out for:

Remy- Club have been monitoring him for a while, We have made a bid that was rejected as it was lower than the asking price, with Marseille making a big last night, we will go back in with another one- but again will not overpay.

Young- Same situation as before, Villa don't want to sell, but recognise an opportunity to take a few of our players that they could do with and make some money at the same time. Wages are a problem our end as he is already on 60k pw, and we are going to have to increase by at least 10k.

Richards- This one is going to drag on. City don't want to sell to us, but the player would like to come, if we put in a suitable enough bid 8-10m, the player will demand to speak to us.

Gallas- Talking to his people about a 1 year deal- asking for ridiculous wages- DL not keen.

Huntelaar- Available for loan with a fee from Milan with an agreed price at the end. Still being looked into.

Parker- Harry would love the player at WHL, WHU do not want to do business with us, If we raise our offer to 10m, then the club would have to look at it. Same as Young, Player would love to come.

Jenas- Being monitored by a couple of clubs in Italy- Juve particular interest- player hesitant as recently married and has a daughter from another relationship in UK. Waiting to see developments with Villa.

Naughton- Available for loan

Hutton- Available for transfer- B'ham a possible destination- we are trying to get as much back as we paid for him- unlikely, but expect him to leave.

Keane- Looks like he will be staying.......

Gio- Being looked at in Italy and Spain- could leave on a permanant transfer- dubbed a 'pre season' player at the lodge.

Luka/Defoe- Both having scans this morning. Will update later

There are a few things I havn't posted, but they will depend on qualification next Wednesday. Next week is absolutely HUGE, we simply HAVE to qualify. Will update as things change.

Be positive,

POTL

UEFA has relaxed its rules on players appearing for two teams in one season in the Champions and Europa Leagues. The executive committee has agreed that a player who appears for a club in any of the preliminary rounds of the Champions League or Europa League can play for another team in the competition proper, so long as his original team is eliminated in the preliminary competition. - EuroSport

With Ajax getting a draw and Seville losing there is a possability either Fabiano or Suarez could be available and not cup tied if either team fail to get through. Also Dzeko is still out there and Hunetlaar so there are still strikers available despite what some posters think. The problem i feel is getting rid of one of our current players to make room on the roster, I'm just not sure who we could sell at the moment as there really does seem to be very little movement. I'd love to get Gallas in before the weekend so we have the cover to rest King.

scrap my last post:
18.07 As a rule, a player may not play in a UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA
Champions League and UEFA Europa League, but not UEFA Super Cup) for
more than one club in the course of the same season. Exceptionally,
however, a player who has been fielded in the first, second or third qualifying
round of the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League is entitled to
play in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League for another
club as from the group stage, provided that his former club did not qualify for
the group phase of either the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa
League; moreover, as from the start of the round of 16 (round of 32 for UEFA
Europa League), a player can be registered in accordance with paragraphs
18.17 to 18.20 below. For the avoidance of doubt, a substitute player who
has not been fielded is entitled to play for another club competing in the
UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League in the course of the
same season, provided that he is registered with the UEFA administration in
accordance with the present regulations.

18.17 For all matches from the start of the round of 16, a club may register a
maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the
current competition. Such registration must be completed by
1 February 2011 (24.00 CET) at the latest. This deadline cannot be
extended.

18.18 One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club
competition matches for another competing club in the current season may
exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded:
−
in the same competition for another club; or

−
for another club that is currently in the same competition.
Furthermore, if the player’s new club is playing in the UEFA Europa League,
his former club must not have played in the UEFA Europa League at any

point in the current season.

Fabiano is out of CL and therefore i am not sure of the point signing him now as CL is where we need that experience and cutting edge

Sounds like Gallas won't happen. Doubt he would take a one year deal to take a step down to us. Whatever your views - we are a step down from CL regulars like Chelsea and Arse.
