I dont quite buy into all this negativity regarding Freidel, should we sign him. Firstly should he become our No1, he certainly is a proven keeper, speaks and understands English, will command the area better and has more confidence in his role, which will benefit his defenders.

Equally our defence aint that bad and with better communication and confidence behind them, I think it would be good.

His age...what has that got to do with anything? How old is VDS?

Lets see what happens...
VDS and Freidel are poles apart ValYid....

As i understand it the key financial constraint in our overall transfer dealings in the wages to turnover ratio - if thats the case we have to use the wages in the most effective manner - Carlo must be on 25k+ Friedel was well paid at Villa so probably 30k+ so 2.5m/3m a year for the number two and three goalies (unless Friedel is to be number one which i cant believe)

that is just an unbelieveable waste of our budget - that extra 25k a week could be the difference in attracting a world class player - what would you rather an over paid over qualified number 3 goalie or a new genuine world class player in the squad.....

VDS shits all over Friedal. Who in my mind is just a slightly older and slower Paul Robinson.

when I first heard Friedel was available a few weeks back I thought he'd be worth a free transfer.

But I didn't realise his age or what the Villa fans had said about his performances this season at that point.

Not so keen now.

A few years ago I would have been for sure because I think he's been among the best in the PL.

I think Friedel is actually one of Villa's top earners.... 40K is nearer the mark

How fucked up is the world when I'm the only one* advocating for a guy over 30. But we're not talking about a field player. Keepers age like wine and while Brad hasn't had a great season, that has a lot to do with the same reasons the rest of Villa had a poor season. Dunne and Collins are his front pairing and it stands to reason that he had to be pretty good to make a back line like that a top half side.

The first thing to note is that he has a good head on his shoulders. He's not one to be crushed by a mistake or go bat-shit insane in the middle of a match. After Robbo and Gomes, it will be very wierd for us to see a stable keeper. He's probably not as acrobatic as Gomes, but he's a much better organizer and with our back-line should save us goals by that alone.

So he's not a bad signing. I will agree that he's not a long term one. But we don't have the money to buy a keeper better than we have when we need to do so much work on our attack. Nobody will envy us having to replace two, maybe three, forwards. Even if we can't attract the creme de la creme, it's still the most expensive position and the forwards we need to attract to get back into the top four will still cost a lot. So you can't spend 15 on a keeper and the same if not more on 3 forwards....and possibly 30 on Falcao.

So I think this is a smart short term solution. He's good enough to get us back into the top four and then we can go and get Rene Adler (this is just me wishful thinking )

That being said, I am saying this under the assumption that Gomes wants to leave. Because, I'm all for sticking with him. Just get him a new coach.

* just saw that VY had a similar take

Could ITk 46 be Nzogbia/ Scotland Newcastle it's almost the same thing init mate/ So long as it's not Jason Scotland.
I wonder if there's a collision course for our transfers if we keep getting linked to over 30's and some are well over 30 I think Mr Levy will get upset.

Strikers cost a bomb & we need 2-3 of the sods. The ones we have won't fetch that much either.

I think we're pinching pennies in the keeper department so we have more to spend in the striker department. That's if Friedel signs anyway.

Don't start saying things like that mate. People get serious about that type of thing. I had some knob correcting me on here the other day when I said Birmingham was up north when I should have correctly stated the midlands.

I'm a londoner through and through. Any place north or outside of the m25 contain people with dodgy accents!!!

Why is it always the case that whoever we sign there's always a number that think its the worst signing ever?

Friedel, Top class experienced goalkeeper that despite his age is still very good at his job, available for free, Whats not to like about it?

Gomes wants out, we need a quick replacement short term, We get the money back for Gomes and go sign a keeper later.

Have you ever heard his faux British accent? That's at least one thing not to like. Just to note, Ohioans do not sound like that.

Ok, fair point, noted

Apart from that, I can't see any negatives to it and agree with your earlier post, more money to spend on strikers where we really need to spend, though I would take one of Van Nistelrooy or Klose on a free and buy two others, Falcao and Lukaku would be good if at all possible.
