So Galahad the Gnome reckons it's a battle to get Sevilla to lower their price, and they are beginning to get closer to what we're prepared for.

I'm not going to argue with the business brain of DL, but I hope we don't end up missing out on this through playing hard-ball. DL should know better than anyone that when you have an asset on your books you will want to get as much as possible for that player.

I know Fab is 29 and has one year left on his contract, but if they are not prepared to be fleeced, I hope we don't call their bluff and miss out.

I wants me a Fabiano!!

Dont rate him Twohig? I havent seen enough to be 100%, but surely Brazil's #9 has got to be good enough for us ?

Maybe that's where Huntelaar comes in. If Fabiano is our first choice maybe Huntelaar is there as a backup if that doesn't come off for whatever reason. I don't really see us signing both so that might explain the link with thw two of them.

But to be fair...who knows?

No not for me. Ignore the Brazil number 9 part as I don't think Brazil has ever had a derth of quality strikers like they do currently.

Rebrab seemed to be suggesting earlier that we were choosing between the two.

Maybe 'choosing' means putting in a decent offer for KJH (maybe Milan have a slightly smaller offer for him as a backup ), then seeing if having that reassurance can twist Sevilla's arm into reducing the price.

If Sevilla go for it, we get Fabiano, and Milan's contingency plan get KJH. If Sevilla don't go for it, we 'choose' not to pay extra, and opt for the Dutch Huntmeister instead.

Anyone who doesn't think Fabiano is good enough for Spurs needs to lower their expectations. He is the best we can get. We've just made 4th place for the first time in our history. We've returned to Europes grandest stage for the first time in years.

We can't be expecting better than Fabiano. He has won UEFA cups, challenged for a La Liga title (where they were in the race until the final day of the season), finished consecutively in the top 4, and represented Brazil in the World Cup (scoring 3 goals).

If we establish ourselves in the top 4, then we can start dreaming of World Class players. Until that happens we should be delighted with the links with Diarra and Fabiano. Both would fit in nicely with what is already an ever improving squad of players.

I'm expecting Huntelaar to be the backup plan if Fabiano falls through. If we get Fabiano, then Huntelaar will go elsewhere. I think he would prefer to come to us than someone like Schalke. But I don't think he's a big target, otherwise I see no reason why we wouldn't have signed him by now.

But this is del Nido's last chance to get a substantial fee for Fabiano. If he holds out for something absurd and we say, 'Fine, forget it, we'll go for Huntelaar instead', he's shafted.

Come on, we all know Daniel Levy would do the same thing if the shoe was on the other foot. He's just trying to milk us for as much money as possible. He'll cave in no doubt. I hate Del Niro, but I can't blame him for trying. They just missed out on Champions League money and now he needs to balance the books.

I really hope you're right. The ITK saying we're still deep in talks with them, coupled with Harry's talk today about him being too much, could certainly suggest a bit of brinkmanship.

Not quite accurate but I agree with the general jist of your post. Fabiano not good enough for Spurs? maybe we are just a teensy bit arrogant.

In this case, simply by stating that (say) £12m is our top limit, take it or leave it. In January no-one will offer half that, and in May Fabiano can just walk. Huntelaar may be an option, and sticking with what we have—pulling the plug on any Keane move—wouldn't be a disaster.

how exactly do you get a club to lower their price?

I guess you table a low-ish bid and then meet in the middle of what we bid and what they want for him.

Chances are that middle ground area is what Levy wouldn't mind paying for him. That's what business men are like. They squeeze the opposition to get what they want.

This may well be the ace up our sleeve. Not so much Keane (who I still rate as a striker that can do well for us), but the fact that we can potentially stick with what we have.

In recent years we have been a club trying to break into the elite. Before any deal has started we are practically on the back foot because the selling club knew where we were, and where we wanted to be.

Now that we have made the Champion's League we are perfectly within our rights to claim that we have strikers capable of getting us into the top competition in Europe (it being true 'n all..).

In short, we don't have the air of desperation that has usually accompanied our soirees into the transfer market.

The guy is 29...we should not be spending over £12M on him

We'll get a couple of years out of him

We should be getting someone about 26

By January Fabiano will be 30 (actually in only 2 months) and have 5 months left of his contract, his World Cup premium would have gone as ppl would have forgotton and no Champions League appearences to add to his value so IMO Sevilla are in a bit of pickle and no doubt Levy is going to milk this.
