What perplexes me is the public noises, from Harry saying the Chairman wants me to spend big, intimating we are very ambitious and then a week or two later there is no value in the market...we want loan to buys. Where is the prepartion in that? They only realised that now?....

I dont get that....when Harry said Levy wanted him to spend big I thought we were day the road in terms of a big signing.

That says to me that we were nowhere near any deal and we wern't actively sounding out deals before the window opened - it would appear.

I thought exactly the same mate. and some things clearly need to be looked at for the summer window.

But lets not forget, we are bidding for £25m players now. If we dont spend it now, doesnt mean it all disapears, it'll still be in the pot in the summer.

Lets just back the boys we have at the moment and kick on for the run in!

To be fair, update 175 from Peanut said a similar thing, basically Harry being indecisive

Isn't that a good thing? if Harry really wanted the player then he wouldn't have been would he?

Pompey fans slag him off for spending too much money and blame him for nearly killing the club Spurs fans slag him off for not?!

Isn't Surez not eligible for CL either? So why would that be an incentive?

Yes mate he may well prove to be a £24m player, but in harry's eyes he would not be given enough of an opportunity to justify that at Spurs.

sorry can you clarify, are you saying that you, or Harry feels that Suarez wouldn't be regular 1st team starter, if he had sign for Spurs?

They'll have known who they want and have a sensible strategy, but Harry will probably have said player x is worth y maximum. And they don't want to be stupid with the clubs money.

Problem is some people just want someone to blame. And when it comes to ITKs it's going to depend on who the source is, if it's close to Harry the slant is more likely to be pro Harry and anti Levy, and vice-versa.

I am not looking to blame anyone really, I just find it immensely dissappointing - proactively you can see the problems down the line and its a snowball effect ie...miss out on fourth, struggle to attract the right players and keep your best ones...you could go and on.

Last season was tremendous and this one in the Champions League. However I always viewed this season as the cross roads...the one to truly make the step up and not look back. I just want the Club to take the best steps to ensure we have the best possibile chance of doing it again - obviously getting that striker could help us to do that, the likelihood increases.

The implications will be profound if we fail to achieve top 4 this season.

Apart from Suarez (that has been said for a while that Harry didn't think would fit into the team) and Dzeko (couldn't match City's wages) what other big names strikers have been on the move this window?

There has been a lot of talk of players moving, but as of yet I dont think there has been a lot of movement.

yay nic this is GOOD post

tbf between levy & harrythey have to be culpable & it does seem that with no director of football strategy things do seem harder to do...

comolli had his knockers but at least it was HIS call to identify from the managers list of targets

But how is it their fault? If they don't think players are worth the money other clubs are willing to pay, or if the players don't want to come to us, or the clubs don't want to sell? What are they meant to do?

It's all very well us as fans saying spend x on y, but it's not our money, and it's not on our heads if the player flops.

We're also in a situation when we have to get the player, they have to fit, first time, and hit the ground running. We don't have time for bedding and settling in. To be fair the gamble if the price gets too high just becomes stupid. Especially when we do have 3 international class forwards here.

Suarez is good but he is also too similar to VDV, wouldn't complement him, that's not to say we shouldn't have bought him but I can see how Suarez would not fit in well

Harry saw him in the mould of VDV

lets move onto the summer and say we signed Carroll (no.1 target)

Suarez would surely be second fiddle to the guy who has made most impact in the premier league this year

At £12m not so bad a risk, but the pressure to play him at £23m? probably too much in truth

I don't disagree that missing out this season could have huge implications, I've posted the same in this thread. However, there is more going on here than incompetence from Levy and/or Harry, which I just don't believe is the case. Neither of them in my opinion are to blame. There doesn't have to be someone to blame, it can just be disappointing that we miss out.

Adie and others said we bid quite a lot for Suarez, along with info that he wanted to come to us, and we have bid for Rossi and Carroll. Adie would say we've spoken with Benzema too, so it's not like we haven't been busy.

Yes and no, I guess the end result is the most important thing, we just can't afford to stay as we are though.

With Harry saying Levy is the one who wants to spend, the money must be available and won't put us at risk.

TBH It doesn't bother me if a player we buy isn't eligible for the CL, the league is more important.

I know I would have taken group stages and 4th at the start of the season, anything more a bonus

As always you miss the point of a post

Once we've paid money for our tickets or shirts, it's no longer our money, it's theirs. This isn't Football Manager adie.

In some good news, Muntari has signed on loan to Sunderland so we won't be getting him!
