New transfer window ending early to give my heart extra time to recover before we do this again in January. Lovely. (y)

This keeps being said again and again, but this does not apply to central midfield where we are quite weak. I've been through this argument in detail in the Pochettino thread. It's nothing more than an excuse i'm afraid.

All we needed minimum was a fucking decent midfielder, they didn't have to be world class to be better than what we have.

Like the one fulham signed

Not asking the itk but more the general fault, I'm guessing herc means that because we multiple targets for multiple positions depending where the chips laid, we've ended up fucking all of them?
Talking about our previous purchases in previous windows.

I guess while I am disappointed the club failed to improve in the window, I'm happier that we did no signings than bring in more deadwood. I know with my work, there is really nothing worse than when the company hires someone who is useless, and it bogs us all down.

So if I had to rate this, it looks like this: Signing Bale > Signing Martial > Signing Grealish > Signing No One > Signing N'Messi. We've ended up just a few steps over the worst case scenario.

At least there's no N'Messi, but this is still a 3/10 window.

I guess if we are employing 3000+ people a day at the stadium - we're talking £1m-£2m per day cost. And lots of talk last week of naming rights deal fall through. Perhaps all the ITK at the start of window, based at that moment in time, was legit and we had cash. Now come August we're skint and admitting it to press, agents etc puts buyers for Toby, Rose etc in a better position to lowball us....

Poch seems to me, to be a honest guy (dont personally know him well enough) if he says hes happy with the squad then thats enough for me
He's a professional, and unlike Mourinho, talks up his players, and says the right things to the press. Whether he is happy inside, I'm not sure.

It's not job done though, is it? We'll just be baby sitting him. Him and Poch kissing and making up only papers over the fucking huge hole that exists until the next window rolls round or someone comes sniffing and whispers him what he wants to hear.
I doubt that. I think there is no way Toby stays if things haven't been sorted imo. Would Poch be happy keeping him as a backup player and hardly use him? No way Toby agrees to that either. Time will tell, but i'm hopeful on what @Hercules has said.

And how much does it then cost to replace either Wanyama or Dier, both of whom Pochettino rates very highly anyway (Dier is basically his on-field captain, Dier is the one who gets called to the touchline every time Pochettino wants to tweak in game). And what about Dembele, who whatever your thoughts are, Pochettino and pretty much every player call a genius and the best player at the club, Pochettino actually compared him to Maradona in terms of talent. We may think they need upgrading, and yes, I'd love a great attack minded central midfielder to succeed and improve on Dembele, but given the high esteem Pochettino holds him and the others in, how much do you think the player Pochettino identifies as being good enough will cost? You or I might think Kovacic is good enough, Pochettino might disagree. So then what, do you put a play on the manager who he doesn't think will cut it?

Personally I think Grealish is the best idea we had this window, but it didn't happen. However, I'd much rather see someone like Skipp accelerated than sign a player who does fit our budget but doesn't actually add any value to the side. Depth for the sake of depth is pointless, especially when you have a manager who openly states he prefers a small squad.

Short term, yes, there is no long term here unless they go back to the table to sort a new deal and that hasn't been mentioned. Baby sitting him.

Looking back at our previous record in case my suspicions were unfounded. But I genuinely don't think we benefit much from signing squad players. Look at what we've managed the last three years - signings who weren't for the first XI or youth (<21):

Lucas
Aurier
Llorente
Gazzaniga
Sissoko
Jansenn
Wanyama
N'Koudou
Lopez
Son
N'Jie
Wimmer
Trippier

Son was an obvious success, Trippier too. Wanyama has severe fitness issues we may or may not have known about, and the jury is still out on Lucas. But the other nine? Varying between poor and atrotious. When we brought the likes of Mason and Bentaleb into the team from the academy, they certainly didn't do any worse than that lot - I'd argue they did better. Whereas now we're stuck with expensive players we don't want and nobody else wants either.

And then I look at a Grealish or a Gomes. They're alright, sure. Are they better than Onomah would be if he'd had a triple-figure number of first team appearances? I doubt it. If we're going to refuse to pay silly bucks for them and give Skipp, Amos, Oakley-Boothe a chance instead, I frankly am all for it.

Don't worry, we just need to stay in the Top 4 until January and then Levy will splash the cash for sure to make up for this mistake!
