Looking back at our previous record in case my suspicions were unfounded. But I genuinely don't think we benefit much from signing squad players. Look at what we've managed the last three years - signings who weren't for the first XI or youth (<21):
Lucas
Aurier
Llorente
Gazzaniga
Sissoko
Jansenn
Wanyama
N'Koudou
Lopez
Son
N'Jie
Wimmer
Trippier
Son was an obvious success, Trippier too. Wanyama has severe fitness issues we may or may not have known about, and the jury is still out on Lucas. But the other nine? Varying between poor and atrotious. When we brought the likes of Mason and Bentaleb into the team from the academy, they certainly didn't do any worse than that lot - I'd argue they did better. Whereas now we're stuck with expensive players we don't want and nobody else wants either.
And then I look at a Grealish or a Gomes. They're alright, sure. Are they better than Onomah would be if he'd had a triple-figure number of first team appearances? I doubt it. If we're going to refuse to pay silly bucks for them and give Skipp, Amos, Oakley-Boothe a chance instead, I frankly am all for it.
Since we improved under Poch people's expectations of us around here and their idea of our stature in the game have gotten absolutely ridiculous. We are not a Man Utd failing to challenge, we're an Everton doing extremely well to be anywhere close.
Yes we've got a proud history - but that frankly has little influence on where we stand now.
No, it isn't Glory Glory, To Dare is To Do.

They can do what they want. Why have you made this "one" player thing? It's just an arbitrary number.

Can't wait till the football starts. Hopefully a win on Saturday to take our minds off this bollocks.
Frankly yes, it is asking a lot. To bring in players good enough for a side among the top 10 in the world right now, on our resources, is not really possible - anyone clearly good enough for such a role will be offered double the wages somewhere else.No one's defending this shit. We want someone who'll pay the money and bring in good players. This is asking a lot but maybe even before pre-season
I think even the most optimistic have given up on that my friend. Its not that the glass is empty, its that its smashed on the floor and currently being trampled by a heard of elephants carrying Levy to Odbins for a celebratory bottle of plonk. Not when there’s still hope to be killed.
At least taking a punt on someone, with A chance of the player improving and proving us wrong is better than no one.

Of course it matters. I love our history. But you aren't a very good historian if you only look at the nice bits. You cannot ignore the fact that we're operating in utterly alien conditions now to back in the Glory Glory days, the fact that for a long time we were not very good and that impacts us now, the fact that we've been close to relegation and devastation when we've ignored the facts, the fact that other clubs who have tried to force the issue have gone backwards, not forwards. It's about being realistic. The fact we won the double in 1961 is a massive point of pride for us - it makes absolutely zero difference to what we can and can't do in a transfer windows in 2018.Can't believe that I'm reading that from a Spurs 'supporter'.
Maybe the history of this club and what it stands for doesn't mean anything to you. If that's the case then you are better off going to Crystal Palace instead...
Correction - he doesn't want signings for the sake of signings.
He might have wanted Zaha or Martial, but it's clear that they don't want to strengthen us by selling them. Plan B is something no one has wanted based on discussion.
Who wants another Sissoko?
