if we have the money or ability to overpay by £5-10m why did Joe feel the need to put in £40m last summer?
Do we even know that he did?

I always assumed that this was just an attempt by the ITKs to explain how we could spend like crazy, since they assured us that Bale would stay...

Do we even know if this actually happened? Sounded like a loan to cover the Bale signings until Real Madrid paid us to me...

On the face of it, that seems like a nice idea. But as someone pointed out in the player thread, it's hardly a good idea to make enemies-especially a Club like River who in the past have turned out many top class kids. What happens in 2 years when Baldini approaches them over a highly sought 18 year old after we have previously screwed them..?
We wouldn't have screwed them, Villareal would have screwed them.

"In addition to acquiring the non-core properties and financing the Phase 1 build, ENIC has supported the Club by way of an interest free, unsecured loan of £40m. This loan will be converted, subject to shareholder approval, into non-voting preference share capital. A circular will be dispatched to shareholders in due course."

I am inclined to believe JJ's source on this one.

Think for a moment, you are the chairman of Villarreal. You have a very good defender on your books and a club offers 17m. On the face it, that's good money but you only own 35%.

To say it is complicated, is an understatement.
But then, you BOUGHT a good defender a few years ago and only paid 35% of the outlay - so you knew what the deal was. The only way shared interests work is if they retire from your club. Otherwise, you have to take the percentage of the profit and be happy that you got the player in the first place.

I think if we both came to an agreement that meant that River Plate got little money, because we structured it in an almost unethical way, then we could probably both be deemed to have screwed them. A screwing collaboration if you like.

I hope we can start selling some players as this seems to be a bit of a problem, holding us back from getting poch the players he wants

I would be very surprised if Levy its not in some form of control it must be like a row of dominoes once player A comes in player B goes out. But I bet it so bloody complicated due to the shylocks involved it is like pulling teeth.

CB for me above all else. I can't bear to see another set of humiliating dickings at the hands of City, Chelsea and Liverpool again.

If we get the defence sorted, we'll have a good season.
All we need there is to have CB's playing as CB's not playing DM's there instead and more importantly keep 11 players on the pitch, unfortunately that's not down to us it's down to fucking idiot officials.
That siad I agree with every word of you post.
By the way, am I the only one who finds a pinch of salt just makes the ITK taste even better?:)
I still particularly like the Hertsyid ITK at the moment.

A double teaming threesome if you like, ending with a creampie in the face for River Plate.

Fair play. I stand corrected. Appears to be completely stadium related, but unlikely to be repaid (prior to the eventual sale of the club).

Another interesting point to consider is the effect of many player's wages over a single player's wages, for example we signed Paulinho, Soldado, Lamela, Capoue, and Eriksen last summer for the same money we got for Gareth Bale, however Bale was reportedly on around £100k a week, whereas those five, if we assume a conservative £60k p/w average wage, collectively become a £300k a week wage. In other words just looking at headline net spend doesn't reveal the true expense of selling one Elvis and trying to swap him in for five Beatles.

Not really that relevant given that Gallas and Bentley were released and Parker, Dempsey, Defoe and Hudd were all sold it would have pretty much offset the wage bill of the new arrivals

Same as the season previous we got a number in but the likes of King retiring and VDV,Modric, Jenas, Kranky, Gio, Bass, Pienaar, Charlie and Carlo sold as well as Nelsen and Saha short contracts expiring probably left us with less salary costs

Levy has a pretty tight grip on wages I imagine

Call me naive but I was really, really hoping for no protracted transfer deals this summer. If Poch is relying on these targets then it will be a problem but if he is adaptable enough to have plan b,c,d...then hopefully this transfer stuff will not derail the start of our season

On reflection I think I am being somewhat naive

thing is with the size of our squad we can afford to let more go than come in, I'm not sure there's much interest in our players

...That leaves with just below 6m. Which gets you a Michael Dawson and a packet of crisps in today's market...

Some proper expensive crisps right there!

(Just kidding SCbots! - Loved Daws but agree with the majority, he's not right for Poch's game.)

And it's one of the problems with changing managers so frequently. Whether we have a DOF or not, changing managers means new ideas, different systems and requirements and ultimately leads to transfer activity, in and out.

Problem is, as you say, we can't give players away. If there is no serious interest we are going to be left with players who aren't necessarily a good fit for the new manager and prevent better options coming in.
