Why not? We are the 14th richest club in the world, and assuming we made a net profit from the last 3 transfer Windows (including this one with Defoe) there surely must be money to spend?

That's the same trap that people fall into when assuming a guy with a shiny new Mercedes on his drive is 'rich'.

I have no doubt that our liquid capital is much lower than most fans would have expected.

I don't blame you for that one bit, but this is a good buy. This guy is in a position of vast need for us, has the tangibles to be an immediate success, and has passed the best litmus test possible for a player in a weak league against Prem opponents by performing very well against England and other national teams of similar stature. Would be the first positionally aware buy by the club in several years.

You what? We lack creativity - buy Eriksen; lack cover in DM - buy Capoue; lack a world class striker - buy Soldado; need a new keeper - buy one of the best around; defensively shaky and limited LB cover - buy Vertonghen; sell Bale - buy the guy all of SC thought was the best young inverted RW / forward talent in the world.

What buys have not been positionally aware buys?

But how many of those players were wanted by AVB?
