first post and been reading the thread for a while but just wanted to way in with my opinion on Hooper as we get great coverage of the SPL in south africa so been watching celtic in my off time. Think hooper would be a great signing for us and ideal at getting on the end of bale and lennons crosses.. Awesome anticipation and movement to create space in the box, and although the SPL is not the EPL's standard you cant take away from his ability to put away his chances. reasonably pacey, strong, good link up with stokes and samaras. But lets see what Mr manager thinks tonight if hes there.

Have we not learnt from the last player we bought from north of the border who was highly rated?

But he ripped Italy and new arsehole. How could we expect a player that had one good game would fail so miserably? It's not like there was historical precedent of one-hit wonders in international games, failing to be good in a league. It had never ever happened before - anywhere. So hindsight is 20/20. :p

Nothing yet....but may i suggest that if youre invited to a poker game involving DL & AVB, you simply smile, hand over your money and leave.....

If this is in some way cryptically referring to some ITK on transfers, then colour me intruiged. :woot:

Would Hooper be home grown since we er... kind of home grew him?
Can see why Levy likes him. Excellent strike rate, coupled with the fact that if he came to us and was even half decent, he'd most likely end up with a premium value England striker on the books.

I know little about him but he's the type of player we should try out IMO. Unheralded and probably underrated

AVB (has worked with the best striker in the world in Falcao) and Les Ferdinand should know their onions when it comes to strikers. If they think he's good enough then that'll be enough for me.

Time will tell.

AVB also said Defoe ws on a par with Falcao

Could you work your way to someone recent? Say within 5-7 years?

I'd take Fletcher off Sunderland in a heartbeat over our current striking options, he would have most certainly put one of the Defoe chances away on Sunday. In fact anyone down Hackney Marshes could have.

Yeah. Larson was pretty good at Man U too, and he was old (although that may have been long ago. I forget.)

According to the quotes I just read attributed to him he only came for a trial at age 14, played 20 minutes and wasn't asked back. I don't think he was developed by us at all though I may have read it wrong.

Either way I don't think we want to be spending £10m on him.

Can we get some perspective?!

Since when is scoring loads of goals in a league that contains Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Ross county and St Mirren the same as scoring a hatful in a league that contains Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool etc etc

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!!!

Do you feel crazy when you take them pills and what perspective do one get from taking them? Any brand name or chemical formula is also appreciated.

Btw no it is not the same. Then again scoring in any league below the EPL is not the same but some have succeeded nevertheless, reckon time will tell. Still prefer us to go for a more established striker from spain or germany where the general quality is higher.

Should i start with Joe Jordan and work my way forward through Lorimer, Archibald, say Gilzean, Rioch, Gemill, Gray and McCoist or should i go back as far as Dennis Law?

Perhaps a punt on this kid would be better than spunking endless wads of cash on the next Rebrov?
Different era.

Now the SPL is about as competitive as League 2. And thats being negative to L2.

you must be the same guy who said falcao wasnt proven when he was in riverplate. there are somethings you can gauge, some things you cant. torres was a world beater in pool, scoring for fun, what did he do in chelsea? if gary hooper has that instinct, that first touch, movement/anticapation,the IQ of a good footballer, no matter where he's from he can transit.

clearly torres is a case of right man right place at the right time. torres has blazing pace but his run up to shoot is horrible. the way he paces himself for the first touch and shot isnt the class of a top striker. i dont know if its his confidence or his injury that destroyed him as a player, but clearly you can see that even if you buy torres for 10m now, he isnt going to replicate the same liverpool form anymore, because hes not truly a bonafide 20+goals per season scorer.

on the other hand you have players like rvp, that is a true goal scorer. both guys scored tons of goals in their old team, then how come RVP can make the transition? because good players, can play anywhere. his first touch, run up for shot, technique is sublime. if you put him in ANY league ANY team, he's gonna score.. hell even if RVP goes to real madrid today, i can be damn sure that he's gonna be a hit

point is theres risk here and there. whatever league they are in, makes only a slight difference, that shouldnt hold the key to transfer. we should only judge by things that we can see. eg workrate, pace, technique, ball IQ, anticipation. these kind of stuffs aint gonna change even if they move teams. if you argue oh they might not be able to settle. i bet carroll had an easier time settling than aguero, and that once again proves that we can should only judge qualities we can see, not intangibles that we cant. if they truly are a talent, they can play anywhere. have faith my friend.
