None of us know the truth re what was available so I'm taking him at face value. It would seem odd for him to put a slightly negative feeling out there to express disappointment when we can't sign anyone else for another 3 months just to put pressure on the club. It made sense to do it when he joined but less so now. This is a guy that wants to win titles and we'd be very surprised if he was here beyond 2 years so I'm more inclined to believe it's genuine disappointment. He has less incentive to keep our powder dry.

He didn't though, he said words and then it went through the funnel of other people's feelings and they interpreted incorrectly.

His comments on Spence are a little unnecessary because some of the focus will now be on a player who is getting criticised simply because he's not world class at 22 but otherwise we know there's a gap to the top teams.

Even if we'd brought in one or two more that everyone is clamouring for (the centre-back and the CAM/RW) to catch City we'd still need:

- a world class LCB
- a world class RWB
- a CM at least on the level of our current ones if not better
- a competent backup to Kane, closer to the level of a Richarlison than a Carlos Vinicius

That's another window's worth of signings and not something anyone expected even in our wildest dreams. Based on how Conte's talking and what we hear from Trix it's clear that this project has shifted to be slightly longer than we all initially thought so we may have to reframe our expectations and the way we evaluate the window compared to how a lot of us felt in June.
Are we reading a different quote because he has been complimentary about Spence being a good signing but also that we need more players - not that we need more players because Spence is crap.

It’s a 7.5/10 window. 3 of those and we’ll be challenging for the top honours. I see each window as being more position/player specific than the previous. We may end up spending that 80m on just one player, to finish things off.

Decent window in that we strengthened the squad plus bought a few youngsters.
Don’t believe we have improved the team as such so this could be a problem as I think some others below us may have. Time
And tactics will tell

Would it be possible, I don’t know if this is crazy, to not shit your pants at everything Conte says that isn’t rainbows and butterflies?

How have we not improved the team - unless only the 11 players that start the game count?

To suggest there are no RWB's out there better than Royal is a bit of a stretch. We did some good business but to not sign decent a RWB that improves our first team and that Conte is willing to use was a disappointment.
Not saying there aren't any better RWBs than the trio we have, just that how many are available?

Hakimi - why would he swap PSG for us?

Aarons - If he is as good as that hype, he woulda been snapped up the moment Norwich got relegated

Tariq Lamptey - That's what we signed Spence for

Ricardo Pereira - injured for an eternity

Denzel Dumfries - Deal with Inter

Reece/Trent/Walker/Cancelo - really?

If anything, we'll still have to ship one of Doherty/Emerson out first.

No self-sustainable clubs can afford 4 RWBs in their side, need to register in squad too.

Trippier would have been perfect for Conte, can't help but think we missed a trick there

It seems that under Paratici there's a lot less information out there for us to consume but it would be really interesting to know who we really want in these positions and who a 2nd option would be.
We obviously wanted Bastoni and Zaniolo and I'm guessing their contract situations are being monitored closely. Conversations must have been had about whether they are on the fence to sign or are definitely wanting us and it's a waiting game. If on the fence, who are we targetting and are we already in negotiations.
I like this new strategy, it feels like the right way to go. Liverpool don't have loads of deadwood to get rid of every window now and keep chipping away at key positions as better options become available.

Would of been nice to find permanent homes for some of the exits so their wages can be budgeted beyond the season.

I'm saying the window was at the better end of solid. 7/10 and would have been an 8 with the (perm) LCB, and a 9 with an AM. As underwhelming as the last day might have been I think cooler analasys will find that waiting for the player we really want is better than signing someone half as good that we can't shift in two or three years. We are still being burnt by that.

Anyway, roll on Fulham and hopefully a bit of a more energetic performance.

Squad improved but the 11 we tart with is not imo better

Three things make us significantly better than last season IMO:
  • Perisic at LWVB is an improvement IMO.
  • Given that Kulusevski and Bentancur are now fully integrated and available all season.
  • We are not 100% reliant on our CM or forwards staying fit now without significant drop in quality.
I think those three things will make us at lest 10 points better this season.

Wolves are looking to sign Jason Denayer on a free transfer. He's a ball-playing defender, homegrown from his time at Man City, and Belgian to boot. Does anybody who watches Ligue 1 have a good read on whether he could do a job for us, assuming we're still looking for CCB backup for Dier?

I've not seen too much of him but when I have I've always thought he was a bit shit.

Can't really complain about incoming but outgoings was really rough and probably the reason we couldn't reach for another big signing.

I hope FP can build some bridges to English clubs because when it comes to selling, his Italian and Spanish connections aren't really helping.

Our points record is 86. Last season we got 71.

So a points target of 87 to break our record would be a great achievement.

Throw in the fact that we've got Conte and a team that's together and organised for a whole season, and not the first 1/3 with Nuno, I think this is achievable.

The idea that in just the past two transfer windows, we were going to go from mid table to gunning down two of the best teams in PL history was never realistic.

City didn't ascend up the table that quickly in the pre FFP early 2010s even with all their Oil money, and Klopp took 3/4 years.

Liverpool had to wait until key targets were getable. City could afford to waste billions buying incremental upgrades and binning them off on loans (to us!), and now operate more strategically because of FFP - or at least the parts they've not figured out how to cheat yet.

We have to be even more strategic with our resources.

2 more windows like the last 3 and we'll have possibly our best ever PL team, bench, and squad.
