The word "priorities" "shouldn't " exist. It makes a mockery of the word priority. If you have more than one priority, then you don't have any priority.
The world's going to hell in a handcart, and taking the English language with it.
If I only prioritised one thing at a time, I would be sacked from my job pretty quickly. ?

Isn't that prety much the definition of prioritising though?
No its not. A priority is just something more important than others, not necessarily the most important. It's a word that implies a comparative. Namely, I prioritise family over work. I can have multiple priorities. For example I can prioritise work and family, over other interests , such as my hobbies etc.

You can use my "biggest priority" or "main priority" to mean the one thing or just by using the singular in the correct context. But similarly I can have a list of priorities, and it needn't even be a short list. Maybe I can be prioritising 20 things I have to do in a month out of 100 different things.

It's not even being elitist to suggest it can only be used to describe one thing, it's just inaccurate.

I mean the expression; "this is top priority" speaks for itself.
