Leaving aside Hoddle as a special case, my recollection is that Levy was widely applauded for pulling off a real coup with Santini; who foresaw that he'd walk out after 11 games and effectively end his management career? Most of SC thought Ramos was an absolutely unbelievable appointment, and even the minority that had looked closely at his CV and weren't quite as unreservedly enthusiastic thought we couldn't have done much better at the time; he was going to bring Sevilla-style football to Spurs! He didn't. With AVB, most were more reserved, but blamed his failure at Chelsea on Terry & co and were willing to give him a chance. In truth, if the football was largely uninspiring, results were pretty good; it seems his demise was less down to them and had much more to do with Santini-style personality clashes and his refusal to bury the hatchet with Ade in order to try and solve our goal drought. It's still not clear whether he jumped or was pushed. The fact that his departure seems to have left Levy with no choice but to appoint Sherwood after a desperate attempt to recruit van Gaal suggests it was certainly very sudden, and possibly took him by surprise.

I think your racing analogy's a good one. There is no such thing as a certainty, and it's frequently been remarked that Levy's had far more luck with the firemen he's brought in than with his first choices for the job.

I don't remember this making it on to SC, although there may have been a thread during one of my sabbaticals. Clearly Comolli is covering his own arse here, but it does suggest that what you see (in this case Ramos) isn't necessarily what you get.

That's an excellent post - one that clearly delineates the difficulties of DL's position - though I doubt many will absorb the detail.

The linked article is also very revealing, and rings true. Sadly, there appear to be distinct similarities between Ramos' and Pochettino's training regimes and results on the field that I hope don't result in the same outcome. I truly believe that DL does what he perceives to be best for the Club at any given time - and so I like him as Chairman - but I now worry that his undoubted ambitions for Spurs have lead him to appoint advisers and managers who simply interview well, but possibly don't have the wherewithal to deliver.

I said this in early August. Ramos's Saville were simply outstanding, but our player did not fit. Now?

Where do you rate this current Spurs team?

I'd say extra fucking ordinary. Of even defying logic.

You really think other teams "fear" us, i mean seriously? Some fans on here hold this squad in very high esteem indeed, i'd say that we are currently no better than our league position tells us and lucky to be there as well.

I'd say we are massively underachieving with the playing staff we have. This is effectively the same side that comfortably finished 6th last season.

I think that the article has been written out of frustration and personal opinion more so than hard facts, although i tend to agree with some of his views.

My concern is that the gap between us and the top 4 is getting bigger and West Ham are appearing to be signing players that could be half decent..

We were a win away at old trafford away from being in the top 4.

The top 4 have all got a lot more money than us. But maybe with a bit of luck and a lot of team work we can give it a go this season. Or go all out for the el which would mean a boost in sponsorship, cl footy and greater recognition.

The Levy apologist defence

We were so close, we nearly signed him.

If Levy would stop fucking around trying to haggle over every last penny and actually backed his manager by getting in the targets he wants in early maybe we'd have won more than 1 trophy in 14 years

Nothing to do with levy. The concern was that the gap between us and the top 4 was getting wider. I'm just pointing out it's not that wide.

The levy defence is this. We are in the position that means we need to make sure that every penny counts. It is not your money and you are not responsible for it so throwing an extra couple of million here and there means nothing to you. But this is levy's business. He does this every day and has done for years. He desperately wants us to succede but does not want to risk our destruction. He is trying to build over half a £billion worth of infrastucture from a company that is used to making profits of around £5m. All the while trying to keep us competitive on the pitch. If i had a choice of whom to run our football club out of you and him, it would be levy all day long.

To be fair, I would choose Levy over Tototoner too.

But it'd be a close call

EDIT: ";)" added to make sure people understand the call wouldn't actually be that close.

I don't believe 75% want him out though.
I've really tried to give Levy a chance but a guy who takes more than half a decade to have a proper scouting network is really digging his own grave.
It's plain to see, whoever he confides in, has had Levy's pants down for years

He pulled his own pants down. How can a person be in charge of a club for 10 years and not know that a scouting network is important? Especially with the model he is trying to implement. Not even the most hardcore erect BSoDL can defend that shit.

He's had his chance. Terrible stewardship. But he balanced the books! Bollocks to that. A chimp could make money in the epl. Look at David Gold.

He has played around with upgrading the stadium, bought all the shares back in the club off supporters at a pittance in the pretence of this. Sold our best players at vast profit without upgrading the team. We pay the most per game for a season ticket in the entire world. Wow. Think about that. Had more managers than almost years he's been in charge and failed to back any of them.

An absolute loss of a chairman.

But he balanced the books......

"...But then Atletico Madrid showed up and they did more in three days than others did in months." David Villa said.

So,are we always negotiating for months to recruit (world class) players?
