Apparently Fulham have a deal going through for a defender, maybe a chance for Tosin?

The window is closed mate.

I think he means if we make a tentative move for him now, then we monitor the situation over the next few months, it will give Fulham an opportunity to brace themselves for an incoming bid at 10.43pm on January 31st 2024.

Of course we'll be told our last ditch bid fell through as Tosin doesn't think he can get into the team ahead of the rejuvenated pairing of Sanchez and Dier.

Ok amazing. So where is the tv money ?

You know running a football club costs money right? Like, you have to pay players and fancy bars that let you pour beers from the bottom up and stuff…

Pro: Delighted with our current first 11. Much improved and great age profile in most areas.

Con: Squad is as thin as a Rizla paper in a number of key areas beyond the first 11 though

Would have liked Gallagher but that was a nice to have IMO.

Depth at CB should have been non negotiable. The idea that Dier or Sanchez could get minutes still worries the life out of me.
By "a number", I'm assuming you mean more than two key areas. Where is it thin aside from CF & CB?

Quite a few of the squad players who are being discounted as not good enough by some were starting XI in previous seasons. While it would be great to upgrade on some of the squad players, in some cases we have already improved on last season's back-ups simply by demoting a starting player to back-up. Davies, Hojbjerg & Perisic are good examples of this.

I genuinely don’t think our squad is as bad as it’s being made out to be.

Last year we had at least two of Dier, Davies, Sanchez or Lenglet starting each game. Now all of them are firmly reserves (or have left). Yes, it would have been preferable to have another top CB option to rotate with Romero and Van de Ven, but Sanchez, Davies and Dier are all proven, experienced Premier League players. Whilst they’re not at the top level it’s not like we’re having to chuck in a 17 year old if one of the starters is unavailable.

Porro and Royal are two good and complementary options at right back. Udogie looks fantastic at left back and Davies is a solid backup.

Similarly in midfield, one or two of Hojbjerg and Skipp started in almost every game last season. When Bentancur is back they are 4th and 5th choice in a two-man midfield, behind two arguably world class players and one of the most promising young midfielders in the league. You’d be hard pushed to find a better 4th choice than Hojbjerg.

We now have a playmaker for the first time since Eriksen left.

Clearly Kane will be a huge miss, but we’ve got a wealth of options in the front three (albeit all of them have some question marks above them and finding goals from attack could be a worry).

I’ve not even mentioned the new keeper. Kane aside, it’s so much better than last year.

Oh, and our manager isn’t a ****.

Yeah I think we’re ok or safe with our depth for this season (given the lack of games) at; RB (Porro, Emerson), #8 (Sarr, Bentancur), #10 (Maddison, Gio, Kulu), WF (Son, Johnson, Kulu, Perisic, Solomon), CF (Richy, Son)

But I worry a lot about our depth at CB (Dier, Sanchez), #6 (PEH, Skipp) and to a degree LB (Davies). An injury to any first choice CB or Biss and we’re immediately extremely vulnerable.

People will learn a lot from watching it and get more of a sense of the reality of transfer dealings.
We had people on here today thinking we were going to sign Bremer, Gallagher and Johnson for circa 120-150 mil pound.
Lol I understand pretty well how transfer dealings work.

Newcastle have to be careful because of how they were run prior to the takeover and financially meeting FFP regulations.

We on the other hand have had an awful lot of room to maneuver in that regard. More than pretty much every other team in the prem in fact.

So when you use Newcastle as some sort of baseline of how things are, you are actually very wide of the mark.

ha sure but I've just watched mid table teams spend that same tv money with no fancy beers :)

I don't think you can blame the players. In every walk of life some people prefer comfort and continuity over pushing the boundaries and I'm sure the club as a whole over the last few years has accustomed them to that. They have every right to reject any moves. It just does us no good to keep comfortable players around the new boys.
Also wouldn’t surprise me if being torn down by terrible managers over the years has beaten any fight they had out of them. Obviously not the exact same but I had similar with a bully manager who made my life hell and all my hopes of progressing and fighting to further my career were the furthest thing from my mind. Sometimes it takes time to get over that.

A rebuild is replacing your current first 11 with better players, and this takes time. Nobody is expecting that to happen over night however support the manager with what he needs to give us a fighting chance for the season ahead.

We literally had 7 different players in the starting XI v Bournemouth compared to the end of last season…

Honestly, if our main gripe is that we failed to sign a backup defender (and have to make do with 3 experienced EPL and international defenders as backup instead) I don’t think we’ve done too badly.

No one could have foreseen the rapid drop off in Hugo, and likewise not sure many thought Ndombele on a 6 year deal when we signed him was anything other than good business. Dier is a little more complicated.
Unless we sign players for good transfer fees 5+ year contracts should be off the table.

Also, we should constantly review players' performances so we know when the best time to sell is.

Dier and co got exceptional contract renewals when we were in a good place and Ndombele a great signing in contract but both have come back to bite us in the arse.

Watch the Newcastle documentary. The richest club in the world who have to be so prudent in spending money.

Who have done things methodically, scouting well and trusting in football people to make the right decisions.. and made CL on the back of it.. who weren't scrambling around on deadline day trying to repair a ton of fuck ups..

Im not using them as a baseline. Just as a useful example of the reality of the transfer market and it’s not as simple as just buy buy buy. I’ve worked in and around football for over 20 years.
This isn’t a one window rebuild.

I hope Ange isn’t completely pissed off at not getting the CB he was clear that he wanted. Or not clearing out the unwanted players that it was clear that he wanted. Or improving his CM options for the style of football he wants to play - which was seemingly clear, from ITK snippets, that he wanted.

Ange is one of the only good things about the Club. Don’t need him going all Conte on us 😂

No one is saying buy buy buy. No one is saying this was a one window rebuild. People are saying Ange has been left short at centre half, and are refuting your mad claim about Lloris, Dier and Ndombele staying around not being a bad thing. And now you’re straw manning an argument to present yourself as reasonable and everyone else needing a dose of reality.
