There seems to be a trend, at club and country level, towards playing ‘without a midfield’. Or even a ‘pivot’. People were shocked by Sir Alf’s wingless wonders, maybe in a few years we’ll see teams without CMs at all?

When we did it at times last season (winks played it a couple of times) I thought our midfield got over run massively. Personally I don't think its the way forward. In England the misfield battle is so important.

I’m not an advocate either way. But, paradigms do change, and it’s often difficult to spot without hindsight.

With Colombia and Germany likely to finish 2nd in their groups, there is a big incentive for England and Belgium to try and lose to the other one.

Whoever comes 2nd in the group will likely play Japan and then Mexico. Both England and Belgium would probably make it to the semi-finals with that draw. However, if we win the group we'll play Colombia who could quite easily beat either of us, and then if we manage to make it past them we'll be up against the winner of the Brazil/Germany fixture in the quarter-finals.

It's an absolute no brainer that the first option gives us a significantly better chance than the second. If I were Southgate I would rest all 11 first team players for the Belgium game, expecting them to do similar. Even if we do end up with the tougher draw, at least our first teamers will have had a breather which would give them an advantage over whoever we come up against.

Honestly, why is Delph in the squad? If he goes home his world cups over basically and you can't factor him into any plans in case he goes early

This has been discussed quite a bit. I think it's virtually impossible to "try and lose". Two teams can stink the place out and not attack each other if they need a draw.

Belgium can significantly weaken their first 11 with changes but I don't think england really can (not to the extent that they will definitely lose).

I think personal pride and the occasion will make england at least just go all out for the win (although we could easily lose the game completely naturally anyway).

If Harry plays against Jan and Tony will they go easy on him so he doesn’t get injured? After all the fortunes of Spurs players for next season rest a lot on Harry and his goal scoring prowess?
