This is more like bring back the Ardiles days, Then we had Anderton, Barmby, Dumitrescu, Klinsmann, Sheringham. Now Modric, Gio, Lennon and Berba, Keano. But this time our midfield is really much better but attackers can't replace Klinsi and Tequila-Teddy, so which one is better attacking five...

On paper I would say the current but they are unproven as they have not yet played together.

I will put a fly in the ointment and say in such an attacking midfield I would have Bent over Keane, who would use his pace better to run behind defenders.

Hi Defsta :) can't see those new five starting many games, so I think put JJ in for Lennon and you've got a more realistic attacking 5

I think Berbs and Keane aren't far behind Teddy and Klinsman - but I agree the latter duo had the edge

as to whether the respective teams are better - well it'll be one hell of a setback if we don't outperform Ossie's team and if Ramos is sacked mid season

I agree that Sheri / Klins were probably better, but Defsta was comparing five not two. So when you put the other three into the equation, it brings out a different scenario.

true enough Bulletspur :)

I think probably our current five will beat the previous quintet results-wise - but as I say I don't think the 5 will be who Defsta suggests, cos I don't think that 5 will start many games next season

I haven't seen much of Gio but I don't expect him to spend a lot of time on the bench. Modric is a definite starter and the best midfielder we've had for a while, Lennon will be the one on the bench. At the moment I would expect his place to be taken by JJ or Malbranque but the likes of Garcia, SWP and Bentley have been linked with us so who knows. I thought Barmby was an excellent player when he was with us and Klinsmann and Teddy I would just have over Berba and Keane. Dumitrescu started well but his form faded. Anderton was an excellent player when fit. I really think of them being the famous four than five. Barmby, Anderton, Klinsmann, and Sheringham just had a great understanding together. So I'd just take the past five over the current five at this time.

We could solve this debate in a stroke if we signed Capel and made it a 'Sexy Six'.

Three things here:

1. Original 5 didn't work because everybody was told to go for it Keegan-style not because these were attack minded players

2. I think the 5 we could field now would be marginally better (on paper obviously)

3. I have no idea why anybody would suggest dropping Lennon to play Dos Santos. Simple: Dos Santos is quick, skillful and left footed. We have dross at LW. Straight replacement. All those teams who stuck two players on Lennon when they played us last season will have a bit more to think about now

Well, I'd hope that the current team wouldn't get beaten 3-0 by Notts County.

Exactly. Everyone keeps thinking he's gonna play right wing just because he played on the right of a front 3 for Barca. That was because of the system they played, they cut in and shot or passed rather than crossing. If we play him in midfield I have no doubt at all that it will be on the left. I do however have a feeling we'll see him up front more than we will in midfield.

This is a point that is worth making and I have made many times before. With two attacking wingers, we're just going to have a LOT more space.

Agreed. Add Modric into the equation and we will really have a very mobile midfield which will require alot of hard work from opponents to keep track of. If Ramos gets them to perfect their movements on and off the ball then we will able to cause trouble to all other teams in EPL.
