When we're playing Everton, Villa or Leeds, we're not expecting to lose as often as we win. We're expecting to pick up the three points most of the time - because we have much better players, much more money, and therefore much higher expectation. In terms of trophies, we haven't lived up to those expectations at all. It used to be that we were in a weird grey area financially below the five above us but above the rest - that's not true any more. Resources wise we're up there, and it's our own failure which has seen us not reap the rewards of that. Hopefully that changes this season - a quadruple would shut it up for a while!

Man City went 35 years between trophies before their benefactors arrived.
And those years included many years outside the top flight, with one in the third tier.

I think I'm right in saying that City didn't even reach a single semi final in the 30 years between losing the 1981 FA Cup final to us and winning the FA Cup in 2011. Nor did they achieve even one top 4 finish in all that time.

By contrast, during our 30 "barren" years (that I would say started after the 1991 FA Cup win), we made it to:

FA Cup - 8 semi finals
League Cup - 2 wins; a further 4 finals (most recent of which might also lead to another win in April); and a further 2 semi finals
Champions League - 1 final

We have also had 6 top four finishes in that time.

You know what? I don't give a rip what opposing fans say. Tottenham is revered everywhere. Here I am, a Canadian living in the US, who has known about Tottenham his entire life. We'll get the hardware in time. It's a top club that epitomizes class. Cheers all

This is pretty selective and there are 2 issues with it for me.

  1. It doesn't take into consideration sides like Wigan or Portsmouth. I appreciate they aren't aspirational sides but I think the larger point is that lesser sides than us have picked up trophies
  2. It doesn't consider volume so paints an overly glorified image. How many trophies have Liverpool, Arsenal, Utd, Chelsea or Man City won since our singular trophy in the last 12 years?
1. I was referring to the clubs currently in the Premier League
2. I was referring to LAST time they won a trophy, not the number of trophies they have won.

It seems you have missed the point of the thread.

You can't put tribalism/bias and banter into any sort of context, we just have to win something and this particular narrative stops...ubtil they move the goalposts onto something else ?
If we win League Cup the goalpost will be the FA Cup etc.
League Cup ---> FA Cup
FA Cup ---> Premier League / Champions League
Europa League ---> Champions League
Champions League ---> Premier League
Premier League ---> Champions League

And no, the irony of the last two is not lost on me :X3:

The trophy thing really winds me up! Especially with all this talk of Kane should leave to win something. I think the most important thing is to be a team that is competing, as not everyone can always win. Over the last few years we have competed for the title a couple of times and made a CL final. When was the last time any team in the CL last competed in a CL final? We’ve done it more recently than Barca for example.

A lot of it is just younger people who don't know their history.
When Leicester won the title for example they acted like they won more than us as a club.
It's very much a case of 'what have you done lately' because we'll forget everything that came before it.
The trouble is when Chelsea and City started to splash the money they won multiple titles and that dwarfs how much a club like us have won. That all happened over a relatively short period of time and makes people think it's normal to win that much.
Arsenal and Man Utd completely pulled away from us in the 90s and noughties because of Wenger and Sir Alex.
Liverpool have a massive history of trophy wins and kept up with occasional titles particularly the CL to keep them successful.
We have a similar trophy cabinet to the likes of Villa and Everton but we've been far more progressive in the league these last 10 years than both. We've also built a state of art academy, training facilities and stadium while playing CL football so there's also success outside of trophies.
It really tells for me when they show Mabbutt lifting the FA Cup in 91 and commentary mention that we've won it for a record 8th time. That record has been totally surpassed over the last 30 years that people have forgotten about it.

I think by now you ought to brush it off as pure banter, part and parcel of being a football fan is taking the hits when you're down as long as you give them out twice as hard when you're up. Besides like I said the narrative is only going to change into something negative just so that they can clutch at straws and use any stick to beat us with.

Every club gets some stick from their rival fans, the fact that we get stick regularly means that we're a threat.
