Was just looking at the table and can see that although we're up to the dizzy heights of 13th, there's a massive 11 points between us and Blackburn who are currently 9th. Also, we're still only 2 points away from the bottom 3.

Our next 5 games are Pompey and Arsenal away, Fulham and Reading at home and Villa away on New years day.

Pompey have been awesome this year (pity we weren't playing them in January as half their team would be missing) and we haven't beaten Arsenal home or away for years. We're expected to beat Fulham (although they always play well against us) & Reading at home, but then again we were expected to beat Birmingham etc. And Villa will be another hard game.

The optimist in me reckons we'll get a point against Pompey as their home form isn't as good as their away form. We'll lose to Arsenal, although scraping a draw is a possibility. Although they look easier on paper, i can see us only getting 4 points from the games against Fulham and Reading and maybe a point against Villa.

So that's 5 games and 6 points. Maybe 8 if we win both our home games. Which means in 5 games time, we still won't be in 9th position. Add to that we have Chelsea away after Villa, it does look a bit worrying. Two seasons ago, the same 5 games would've given us 10 or 12 points.

I think we should brace ourselves for a fight. I still think come the end of the season, we'll be in the top 8 but it will be a lot harder than some may think. I'd love to go to Pompey and stun the fuckers and take all 3 points. If we did that, that would change the whole outlook for the rest of the games and give us a much needed confidence boost. The home fans can do their bit as well by getting behind the players when the chips are down etc etc but that's for another thread. Even re-reading this, it does appear pessimistic, but like i say, one stonking result could change our whole season - hopefully Arsenal away. Now that would be nice.

Thoughts on the next few games?

No matter how hard I try, i just can't take relegation talk seriously. I kind of think people want to talk about it to make the season more interesting. You are right we've got some tough games, but after feb, we've got a pretty nice run in and I'm sure we'll finish top half.

I don't think we'll be anywhere near relegation at the end of the season, but it's gonna be a long haul to get to even a mid table position over the next month or so, whereas some of the people i talk to in the pub before the match seem to think we'll be zooming up the table because we have a new manager.

I've got to say, Portsmouth showed quite a few defensive frailties against Villa on Saturday, and this season James has had to make a hell of a lot of saves. They've allowed far more shots on target than we have, so we're in with a chance. The trick, of course, is to stop them scoring…

Unfortunately, Fabregas, Flamini, Hleb and van Pervie are all due back for the Arse, so we're not going to have the advantage of an out-of-sorts Gilberto and a totally invisible Diarra in central midfield. I'm not hopeful.

Eight points is the best we can reasonably expect. Ten, I think we can be very happy indeed. Anything more, I shall eat my chuddies.

Just our luck that little shit will be back for our game, they have looked pretty ordinary in the last two premier league games!

I'm quite confident we will finish in the top half as well but the highest we can reasonably hope for is 7th and that's a mountain to climb really. A draw or hopefully a win against Pompey and Villa, a point off both the goons and scums, and two home wins would make that 7th and hopefully a Eufa cup place possible. Other than that we have to rely on winning a cup to go on a european tour next season, which is a must for the team's development.

Hopefully, King will be fit for the goons as they seem to have all their integral players back in a week or two. By mid Jan we should have almost all the players back fit and play to our strength, then we should be fine. And we shouldn't be much affected by that African Nation Cup either unlike many other teams. That's when we should take full advantage of to seriously climb up the table.

Robbo
Chimbo King Daws/Kaboul/Rocha Bale/LYP
Lennon JJ KPB/Zoko/Hud Steed
Berba Keane/Defoe/Bent

Not a bad group of players, is it? I still have faith.

we have to win four games and blackburn have to lose four for us to overtake them, that doesn't even take into account all the teams between us and thm losing four as well. we have only won three all season! i will be very suprised if we get any where near the top 10 after such a crappy start to the season.

I genuinely believe we'll be happily surprised once the next 5 are over...3 points next week and the optimistic idiot in me says 3 points the following too...well, it HAS to happen SOMETIME and sod's law says that of all the games this season we should not even dream of sneaking a 1-0 away win, it's at the scumirates...which is why we will win 1-0 there!!!

In August, noone would have imagined us in this position either, so any teams could have some bad and good runs during a season. It's up to us to turn the season around and we'll see how far that'll bring us. There still are 66 points up for grab. If we can snatch 40+, who knows? Fingers crossed.

It's a nasty set of away games. I'm normally stupidly optimistic but just can't see us getting a point at Pompey or the scum. My gooner in-laws keep baiting me to join them in the box they've got access to at the Emirshites. It would be wrong for so many reasons... Anyway, I digress.

If we do manage to get a point or four in those two away fixtures though I agree with the above comment that it could really be a launch pad to scrap up the League in Jan and Feb. After that, the run in doesn't look too shabby for a team with confidence....

It's going to be a tough few weeks but the win yesterday will give them confidence which hopefully will carry them on to scrape a few results from the coming games. I'm going for 10 points!
The table looks tight from 5th to about 10th, some of the teams playing really well at the moment, Everton are flying, Pompey etc. Once Jan hits with a lot of clubs missing players, hopefully they'll start to drop points & we can catch them.
Think we'll finish in the top 10 & hopefully gain Europe through a cup.

yesterday's win was vital otherwise bottom 3 at Xmas was very much on the cards (it's still a deffo possibility)

I certainly wasn't cheering Boro's win - it was a terrible result for us - we need a Boro team well below us and short of confidence -

I predicted 7th for us this season i'm gonna be well out I fear - but not as far out as the many predicting top 6 or better :)

I don't think we'll get relegated but if we lose our next 2 lge games which is well on the cards- the games v Reading & Fulham will be well nervy - and will our fans be backing us - or will most of them be preferring to stay silent or moan at whoever they don't like at the mo

I felt so much more confident after yesterdays result. We just have to take one game at a time at present and get through this tough patch. I think we can get something against Pompey. Arsenal is another story entirely, but thats for another time.

Just hope there is a real buzz around the training ground today, a clean sheet would have been huge but they have to really build confidence off the win. Glad we have until the weekend before another game - get everyone itching to get on and play.

I'm still in morose mode. I think the August fiasco has set us back three years. I expect us to finish closer to the 14th place of 2003/04 than the 5th of the last two seasons.

Last season we got 15 points from the same last 5 games. This season we got 8. Wendy hasn't changed our fortunes yet and I fear it may be some time before he does.

the last 4 games in total i would argue...

Villa should have won after thier second half maulling of them, Sevilla destroyed them and then Newcastle and the mighty Boro.

I think 9pts. I've got a good feeling about Pompey and very bad feeling about Arseanl and then 2 home wins.

As far as the league is concerned, we can write this season off. We should target one of the cups (our most realistic target being the waffer). Failure to land a trophy this season will surely see the exit of berbs - our finest import since Jinola
