I agree with those saying we shouldn't expect miracles from Levy in January but if we don't do something then it still feels like more of the same.

He's been free of criticism recently because of Ange...a manager who definitely wasn't his first choice.

And, to be fair, we did some good business in the Summer. Not enough but maybe all that was possible.

But doing nothing in January destroys all of that fragile good will for me.

Wasn’t he the first choice ?

Not sure if he was, but he pretty high up on the list

when you hear Gabby speak about Ange it sounds like he was.

Nagelsmann and the Feyenoord chap were definitely ahead of him in Levys mind.

I suspect a few others turned us down as well.

I'm don't reckon Nagelsmann was in the running. The club pretty quickly dismissed those rumours when he became available, and after we distanced ourselves from him he struggled to agree terms with both PSG and Napoli, so I assume his demands were totally unrealistic so he wasn't even an option.

It is just my interpretation but I think it's far more likely that we dismissed the rumours once it became clear he wasn't interested.

But do accept that's my speculation.

How do we know he wasn't his first choice? The deal happened very quickly after Celtic won the cup final and there is no way that deal got done in a few weeks. From the bits I've heard up here, discussions were happening from March.
It's a lazy assumption based on media chat that we'd approached loads of managers first but I think other than Slot, Ange was either 1st choice or a very close 2nd

Nothing to do with first or 2nd choice. He is here now and kicking ass!
It's all about looking forward and the Jan window.

So what if he wasn't first choice? There were some proper meltdowns in here when the Nagelsmann link was dismissed and Slot turned us down. And when Ange appeared as the front runner? That meltdown wasn't far off.

Levy isn't clairvoyant. Based on the available information at the time, no one could know that Ange would hit the ground running and be such an instant succes. Even those of us who wanted him in from the get go didn't expect that.

What matters is that he was on the list. And when the list was narrowed down he was among the top candidates. And when push came to shove, Levy had the balls to hire him, while many on here still saw him as below us.

Levy can be criticised for many things, but 'not having Ange on the top of his list' isn't one of them.

Not sure if he was or wasn't first choice but by all accounts he was a top candidate they had their eye on so I'm not going to hold which number he was against Levy, if he was 1,2,3 etc not really fussed, he's an amazing appointment.

However I fully agree with your final point that if we do nothing in January then it destroys all of the good will, but I think we will sign at least a CB and hopefully another attacking player, cherry on the top would be another CM depending on injuries but the first 2 are a must.

I couldn't agree more.

All this 'Levy has got lucky' with Ange is BS.

Levy set a criteria for the kind of manager he wanted and Ange was on the list of managers that fitted the criteria. That is the most important bit - recognising what kind of manager we need to become the team we want to be. Whether you get the perceived 1st, 2nd or 10th choice is irrelevant. The most important part is that they fit the criteria.

I just want to see the manager backed. And i don't mean spending obscene amounts of money, I'm talking about taking a hit on players that have not worked out and being decisive and efficient when going for a player we want. The squad needs clearing of some very average players and it also clearly needs improving in some very specific areas.

If we can do a bit of both of those thing this January i'll be happy.

My hope this that the board now have the pieces in place to execute the above. Let's see.

I don't think we will take a hit on players unless absolutely necessary. Although I think that's just business sense. As long as we get the players out the door even if on loan we should be OK though. The good thing is some contracts are running down now so we won't have Lloris and Dier next season. Ndombele must be getting close too. The important thing is recruitment has been better so we should at least find it easier to shift players in future. I just hope we maintain that standard of recruitment because that's where it went wrong under Poch.

I am sure I heard Ange himself say that he wasn't the club's first choice - and I don't believe Ange would lie.

I also don't think the 'lucky Levy' idea is entirely without merit considering the omnishambles of managers he has appointed in the past. We've had some good ones, especially when things have felt a little desperate, but we've had some terrible appointments too.

The optimist will see the Ange appointment as Levy having turned a corner, finally learning his lesson after 20+ years on the right kind of managerial fit for the club. The pessimist will see the Ange appointment as lucky, in the context of many bad choices, and fear a return to the scattergun approach in the future.

We won't really know anything for certain until it's time to make another appointment - something that I hope is so far in the future that Levy is no longer involved in the decision.

Can't say I understand the scenario where we have players like Lloris, Perisic and Dier who aren't in the plans but we keep them onboard until their contracts expire. Why not just pay up the remainder and create a few gaps?

Because we have a budget for wages: if we accelerate those players’ wages and pay them out all at once, it doesn’t create more budget for this year’s wage costs. However convincing those players to leave the club and get work elsewhere (and off our wage bill from Jan to June) is what frees up wage budget.
