The over-rating of youth

It seems that it is still a habit that youth players are being touted for more than what they should be. Man Utd with Januzaj, Arsenal with Gnabry and now us with Bentaleb. Yes these players have looked good in their fledgling careers so far but they've played a handful of games between them. When Livermore started playing for us, everyone was hailing him. Remember the game we got beat 3-1 by united? People were still hailing livermore for his 'dominant' display... look at him now...

Bentaleb is a solid player.. no more no less. He may become a top player or he may fall by the way side but for some fans to be suggesting he is the next zidane is totally wrong. Talking about setting a player up for a fall. Case and point with Lamela.

I just hope Sherwood isn't throwing all his eggs in one basket with youth and getting rid of valuable player ala Holtby etc.

Nobody with a brain ever hailed Livermore.
If anything its always been the opposite he was the worst of Parrett, Bostock, Carroll, Kasim, Mason and etc.

However we are led to believe his attitude and hard work earned him a place in our team albeit on the fringes

I haven't heard him as the next Zidane. All people have been saying here is he looks good and should become a star if he keeps up.

Why should he become a star? Harry Kane was meant to be one of the best players coming through the youth and he's hardly pulling up trees. All this rubbish if he continues to this and that... give the player a break and don't expect much from them... talk about building up for a fall

So we developed the best group of youth players we've had for donkeys years, and we shouldnt give any of them a chance?

Kane has never been one of the best players in the academy because he hasn't found his position yet! But he has some great attributes

I think it shows what a prospect Bentaleb is by the fact he looks solid as one of the two centre midfielders when he is 18 years old in one of the best leagues in the world. We have one of the best youth systems in the country and I am really glad we have started to use it. Not every player we bring though is going to be a massive success but there are so many advantages to utilising our youth players.

We finished second in the last season U21 tournament and dominated most games. There would be no sense to have a youth team if we wouldn't give them chances. It would also destroy the motivation and mentality of the whole academy if you see you won't get any game time in the first league.

We should use our talents from time to time slowly.

I like that we give Bentaleb a chance...there is just one problem....we already have a lot of talented midfielders waiting for game time...

I can't help but feel that our youth players are generally under-rated on this forum, rather than over-rated. Except perhaps in the dedicated youth thread. There's a resistance to giving youth players a chance, and an eagerness for new signings.

It's understandable, because it's been a long time since we produced an unquestionable top talent (Ledley). Hopefully we can bring a couple more through soon, and people will become better disposed to our youth players. Because our youth structure has improved a lot over the last decade.

Oh, and Januzaj is fantastic. Unfortunately.

I don't remember Jake ever getting much love on here. But at Hull they think he is fucking marvellous.

Sorry, your point was?

The only one I can think of is Townsend which the media hail as our new Bale...
