The race for the title

Palace beating Pool yesterday is great - it means they are (almost) safe from relegation. They have Burnley on Saturday after playing us Wednesday. Surely they will have to rotate and focus on getting something out of Burnley to be 100% safe?

That's not to say it will be easy. I expect Chelsea to thrash S'ton. The biggest challenge for us is to not crumble as hopes of the title fade.

FFS show some damn balls - we are still in a title race. 6 games to go and only 4 points in it.

The odds are against and may have got worse after this weekend, but to throw in the towel and assume its all gone and theres no chance is quite frankly pathetic.

I know that and you know that but its the players who need to believe it.
We'll find out if we've grown from last season Wednesday evening or if we really do have some weird problem with throwing the towel in.

Why has the thread title changed? Did I fall asleep for several days and we are now more than 4 points behind with 6 games to go?

agreed but what we saw on saturday was not capitulation or meek surrender - its was a couple of bad errors and some shiity luck (when in his whole life will matic hit a shot like that again).

It's all about the midweek games. If we put in a weak performance on Weds and drop points it's over imo. We still have a chance though and hopefully the players still truly believe.

On the flip side though, we are certainly not guaranteed 2nd. A very dangerous attitude to take.

All depends on how we react to that defeat on Saturday. I said even prior to the match that if we lose the most important thing is that we pick ourselves straight back up. I also thought that if things happen in a typically football way, we will drop points on Wednesday and all the talk the next day will be that we're crumbling again, deja vu etc.

Really hope we prove what some people may be thinking wrong and show our character on Wednesday.

The whole winning mentality etc thing is starting to do my head in now.

The media saying Arsenal ground out the win because they are winners etc. Bollocks. They got extremely lucky and when you get the rub of the green it's a lot easier to win the big games. I've said before that the team didn't cover themselves in glory at times physically in terms of their ability on Saturday but mentally there was nothing wrong there.

We've seen before teams where as soon as that penalty goes in. It's over. 5-1, 6-1, 7-1!

We battled back twice and as others have commented, Matic...Wow.

Of course the real test will be Wednesday but as much as I would hope for some rotation, I wouldn't write this lot off yet. Highly effective against the top sides, however saying that, if we are clinical they won't be able to live with us. Just a case of taking the chances that present themselves.

I'm slightly more concerned about the scum on Sunday now they've at least shown they can park the bus. Again, we need to be ruthless against them. The title isn't out of the question yet but of course very difficult with Chelsea's run in. Keep believing though and you never know!

I'm less concerned about them, the players are going to protect themselves to avoid a potential injury

Ha ha...yeah remember some mug saying the same thing last year.

Some people never learn.

I remember when certain mugs were saying that our season was over when we got knocked out the FA Cup in 2009/10. (y)
Which goes to highlight my point that it's not over until it's over one way or the other.

My posting history in this very thread argues that the race for the title was not over when others were saying it was.

Those people who say 2nd is 'guaranteed' are mugs and those that say the title race is 'over' are mugs, too!

I don't get some of the negativity after Saturday. It was one game and we were unlucky to lose.

Now people are predicting a complete collapse and its all doom and gloom. We should really be making the most of these times, two years in a row we have been involved in the title run in!

I recall seasons not that long ago when I was anxious about being 4 points off a UEFA cup spot and could we make that up, now we are a 4 point deficit away from being champions! Yes it will be difficult but lets be positive and most of all lets enjoy it. These times don't come around that often. My first game was 85/86 and since then I can only remember being seriously involved in a title race a handful of times. Remember the bad times - make sure you enjoy the good times!

Agree with some of that. There is certainly nothing wrong with our spirit.

We do need to get more streetwise though, and that is part of the whole mentality thing. Chelsea didn't make it easy for us. We had to work for our two goals, whereas we gave them at least two presents.

We are all aware of where we are at right now and also how good it is but it's no good just only being involved in a title race or involved in a semi or indeed a final, we need to start winning one here and there which so far we can't.
Poch is not stupid he knows his profile is gradually increasing season by season with the respect and admiration that he is gaining throughout the EPL and the wider audience.
But he also knows that finishing 2nd or 3rd in the league and only reaching semi-finals is not enough, it's about getting over the line and finding ways to win on a regular basis.
Maybe we need to bring players in that have done it before to show us how it's done, as otherwise it looks like another long summer of Chelsea and arsenal fans laughing at us again when we promise much and deliver nothing while them two pick up the silverware.
