New season referee watch thread.

I'll kick off with Kevin Friend's woeful homer performance for Chelsea tonight. Couple of decisions that would have been given elsewhere without a doubt. Ivanovic shouldn't have been on the pitch to score the winner, and then Benteke gets a card for being kicked in the head by an already booked Ivanovic.

Howe the fuck you don't give the Terry hand ball is beyond me. If he thought it was a foul on Terry then give it, if not you have to give the hand ball. I really wish they'd spent the "goal line" money on introducing TV evidence instead. I'm sick and tired of Refs deciding the outcome of games based on something other than what they see.

As soon as I saw that he wasn't sent off for that I knew he would score the winner.

Great start to the season Kev.

I'm sure you'll justify it to yourself that you were unsighted or some other nonsense, but you fucked up big time.

I'm sure you'll get a pat on the back and rewarded with The Chelsea/Mourinho seal of approval for such displays though. (AKA the ; you can come again award)

Haven't they introduced new rules where players can be retrospectively punished even if the ref saw the incident?

I didn't see the Ivanovic incident, but is it the sort of thing they can review?

I'm not in favour of technology being used other than for determining whether goals are goals. However, I completely understand your frustration. I'm sick and tired of seeing referees favour the likes of Chelsea and United, and giving home biases. I thought Clattenburg was his usual, enfuriating self against us at Palace. Just about the only thing he called right was our penalty, I was genuinely amazed he gave it and wondered whether it was because of the linesman.

I genuinely think refs should be interviewed after games to explain why they gave decisions and allowed to be criticised for them. They're afforded too much protection and not held accountable for their actions which could potentially ruin an entire season's worth of hard work.

He can try but the video replay of the elbow showed he had clear line of sight and was only 5 yards away.

Did anybody see Howard Webb's sending off over in Zagreb?

Very soft in my opinion.

The standard of officiating in this country is actually disgusting.

I love these threads. The standard to which fans hold referees is quite astounding. The Premier League has a very good standard for referees. Probably the best in the world.

Example: Our game against Crystal Palace. There was at least 20 posts about how much Clattenburg sucked and how it was terrible. He had one key decision to make and he got it right. Once you start saying referees suck because you disagree with a couple foul decisions they make in midfield or in the corner which make practically no impact in the game, is equivalent to giving a player a 3/10 because he misplaced a few passes in midfield, but still made the key pass to assist on the winning goal. Does that make sense? If a referee, who makes 300 decisions a game, misses three or four fouls in an area of the field that doesn't really impact the result of the game, and in addition, got the big decision right, then that referee had a good, if not great game.

If you read though that match day thread without watching the game, you would come away thinking that Clatts missed three penalty decisions and two clear as day straight reds. On the other hand, a striker (Defoe), who is paid millions to play professional football misses the goal from 14 yards out and it barely raises a peep.

These threads are just a place for fans to vent, because you have no idea what you are talking about and couldn't spot a good ref from a mile away.

I take it you are a ref cwy21?

If you are good on you as it's not a job I would want. Completely thankless task.

Well I can't defend them there. What a terrible cop-out between the two. AR should easily be able to determine that was a penalty.

I think the referee got an equalizer today it's a good thing Swansea didn't.

2 wrongs made a right,.... missed penalty when Shelvey hit Townsend in the first half, then awards penalty in second half with Townsend "simulation" past Shelvey -- damned if you do, damned if you don't

referee is a lousy job at any level - why do they do it?...

Another prime example of a ref failing to stamp out diving.

Cashley with blatant dive right in front of ref.

Ref bottles it - no yellow.

Again.

They say they have a hard job but the don't half make it hard for themselves.

Refs are scared of giving any decisions against Mourinho, thats 2 blatant handballs that should have been pens in Chelscums last 2 games, plus the Cole dive you mentioned, unpunished. This really pisses me off.

Howard had a stormer for Liverpool today. Sturridge's goal was a blatant handball, then a couple of minutes later Toure wrestles O'Shea to the ground in his own area and Mignolet picks up a back pass.

Webb is a piss poor referee and has been his whole career. He's one of those that gets away with being shit because he does it with an air of authority.

I believe that refs need to be shown their controversial decisions / incidents after matches and then be allowed to say "It was right" or "Yup I got it wrong"

Not that it will change anything but at least it is closure.

And then be beaten, shot & stabbed ... by 12 dwarfs, with sjamboks, pellet guns and butter knives ... until it really really hurts

Not that it will change anything but at least it is closure.

Yip, that would give me closure
