Is there any debate now?
Football is about playing as a whole team, not individual performance and record (not everyone is bale or VPS, and defoe is not that kind of guy)
This match clearly shows the importance of Soldado - his off ball movement (e.g. attract defender out of his position and create space for Paulinho) and ability to connect the team in the box , he enlightens the team not only by open play goals
And this is why Ade starts instead of Defoe last season. At least he can do some hold-up and connect stuff even though he can't score goals.

I hope AVB just use this game to shut Defoe's mouth
For EPL match, I think there is no genuine debates for who should start as our main forward in EPL this season (unless Ade gains his form and motivation again.... well, I don't rule that possibility out)

Exactly this, when Defoe isnt scoring - he offers nothing at all, when Soldado isnt scoring, he still does a hell of a lot. Heck even when Ade isnt scoring, he still contributes to the overall play.

Yeah Soldado would've changed everything. He's just so strong and would've made our midfielders play better for sure.

lol.

Personally, I feel justified in my ongoing opinion that Soldado (and Adebayor) should be ahead of Defoe. JD is a great finisher but brings nothing to the team unless he feels he has a scoring opportunity. His movement is poor, at least Soldado drags defenders around hence why Gylfi and Eriksen normally find more space, also JDs link up and hold up play is atrocious and doesnt allow for the possession game we play around the oppositions area. A players form shouldnt be decided on their stats but what they do for the team, Soldado should 100%be back in ahead of Defoe next game and shouldnt have been dropped for this. Kane. Adebayor and Soldado would have all been better options yesterday because of the way we play now.

Do you realize that before they score we were still controlling the midfield though not as efficient and dominating as before. The midfield cannot create much if the striker is too thick and can not make intelligent movement or join in the build up.
Don't try to defend the just for the sake.

Soldado scores that when townsy whipped that cross in first half, Defoe made no movement to get in front of his defender near post, or sag off for the cut back or even peel off and go back post. He just ambled into the box square onto the defender. Natural goal scorer

Well its worked for the other games

Mate it's pointless. All they look at is the stats, ' Soldado has only scored 2 goals, he obviously hasn't contributed to the team winning games..'. Its frustrating that people can't judge past newspaper headlines and the little stats table on a Wikipedia page...
