The problem we have is when we started bringing youth through, we didn't have that great a squad and they could get a chance easy. Now we have improved the level required for the youths to break into our squad is even higher, so unless we think a youth has alot of potential I wouldn't want to pay stupid wages to them.

I'm personally not for paying high wages for talent either. Whether it's keeping or attracting them. If we're never gonna play em, I'd much rather the wages go to a first timer we want to sign or keep

This was always gonna be the case as we improved. Said a while ago we would start to see high quality casualties like Bennetts. The only solution really is the chelsea model. Where you can hang on to a player like RLC until they are ready for 1st xi. Ultimately I think it’s the best solution for player and club. Players get to play at championship or lower level PL but we still get the option when they hit 22/23 and look 100% ready. I think it’s exactly what will happen with KWP. I just think we will hang on to players longer and see a lot more loans of players in 20-23 bracket.

Who exactly have we bought
that has improved the squad so significantly
that blossoming youth can't get a look in
Crucially we've kept our key players so far
Dele, Kane, Vertonghen Alderweireld Eriksen and Lloris
and the squad and manager have improved together.
But Aurier has certainly blocked KWP.
Apart from Sanchez and Foyth in defence
few incomers have impressed.
Some of the squad are ordinary at best.
Davies, Sissoko and Wanyama for starters,
others are hit and miss (Rose and Son)
Jury is out on Moura,
AlthoughTrippier is much improved certainly.

We have done brilliantly agreed
but our famed focus on youth and our own
is more noticeable by its absence lately.

''More hououred in the breech than in its observance''
as Bill the Bard put it.

Nobody even the stars is paid stupid wages.

Who said we bought players to stop them? I just said our squad is improved, which can be the players we had have improved. Like trippier as you said and even Eriksen improves each year and then you have the youths that are in our squad like Kane and Winks who a few years ago were given their chance.

Fair enough Yid-ol
I thought you meant we had improved the squad
when you said, ''we didn't have that great a squad''
not that the squad itself had improved over time.

Did he actually sign a new deal ? Sure someone said he was just retained as a 3rd year scholar ? Not even sure what that means tbh lol.

yeah he was the only 2nd year player to just extend his scholarship to a 3rd year rather than sign a pro. it's like an informal contract. if another club wants to sign him then they can just take him and his fee will be decided by a tribunal but we can block him from playing for the duration of the scholarship if we wanted(though i'm not sure that applies if he goes abroad), or we can just agree a fee like a normal deal. scholars are also on a fixed wage whereas pros can be on any amount.

Wasn’t that similar with Sancho.

City wouldn’t let him come to us and said they’d refuse to let him play while he still had a scholarship with them.

Hence why he ended up leaving for Dortmund

Must be one of the most unlikeable youth players for a good few years

Getting so boring now

It’s not like he even has much ability. You could understand it if he was a Sancho etc. He runs like John Inman being chased by a bee, and scuffs pretty much all of his shots.

I like him as a player, I always have. He's very rough, you're absolutely right which is why I have said that although it would be a shame to see him go we absolutely can't give him a shot in the first team yet because he's blatantly not ready. Not technically and not mentally. Its not like he's a pace merchant who can get pushed through because their one uber skill is so potent. He's just a fairly strong, broad lad who has a natural gift for goal-hanging. It wouldn't be good for his development or our performances to go into our matchday 18 on a regular basis.

I agree. I think despite my previous comment, he has something. Seeing his name, and Roles’, popping up so often on score sheets from a very young age was interesting. Will be interesting to see if he’s as productive at a higher physical level.

Yup. Good luck Scott. Sad to see him go. I'll admit I'm a little disappointed that he's gone this quickly, it sort of suggests that there was a lack of due diligence and/or clarity when we offered him the job and he accepted. I got the impression that the appointment was very much with at least the midterm, if not the long term in mind. To see him depart a little over 12 months after he arrived, not for a manager's job but just as a first team coach shows that he certainly didn't see managing our U18s as serious career move. As I say, good luck to him, still think he's an excellent professional, just a little annoyed that his time here wasn't a litter longer, a little more settled, a little bit more...serious. There's been entirely too much change in the coaching setup at youth level for us over the last three or four years.
