The Summer Clear Out

Not knee jerk but as the summer approaches who do we think is not good enough for the squad next year. My list:

Friedel - doesn't suit our high line
Naughton - just not up to standard, would replace with Smith
Gallas - nothing need be said
BAE - I must confess to never having been a fan, note enamoured with Rose but on current form he would be an upgrade
Hudd - too slow
Parker - time to head to ballet school where pirouettes are appreciated
Dempsey - should never have been bought
Defoe
Adebayor

I'm sure others will suggest Livermore but I think he is a good squad player.

Whilst i largely agree with this, the problem then becomes that we need to bring in replacements, and frankly we aren't going to overhaul that much and then spend big in the summer. Personally i think it will play out more like this:

  • Friedal - released, clearly not up to it anymore, which is fair enough.
  • Naughton - loaned out to PL club (like with Rose this season).
  • Gallas - released, same story as Friedal.
  • BAE - i think there's an issue there with him an AVB, BAE is far too laid back for AVB 's style IMO and yet he's still worth good money.
  • Hudd - he just doesn't fit into our current system at all
  • Parker - i think is a useful squad memeber and provides better cover for Sandro than anyone else at present. I would only sell if we can line-up a replacement for him and not spend more than about £3-4m net.
  • Dempsey - another useful squad player, but he just doesn't fit into out squad anywhere, especially now with Bale playing where he is, i think we'll get good money for him this summer and should cash in.
  • Defoe/Adebayor - i don't think we can afford to sell and replace both, for me i would prefer to keep Defoe, although it's a very tight call, as i think he can be utilised best as an impact sub for us next season and then look to replace thereafter, Ade should in theory get us more income than Defoe too.

Keep Livermore if we don't replace Parker as it may be he steps up and fills Parker's role next season as main back-up to Sandro. However if we sell Parker and bring in a new guy at DM then perhaps a PL loan for Livermore.

Realistically that leaves us needing to buy:

New GK (£2m), New CB (£5m), New RB/LB cover (£5m), New LB (£13m), [New DM (£8m)], New LM/LW (£12m), New ST (£20m)

TOTAL spend of around £60m (not including the DM role). With around £30m in sales generated through Hudd, Dempsey, Defoe/Ade and BAE.

I think those numbers look pretty optimisitcally realistic, anything more than that and i would say we're dreaming.

Are people really suggesting we should keep someone who earns £65k a week (Parker) as a squad player? Are we Man City all of a sudden?

We might have to who else is going pay him £65k a week?

I think some of you are over estimating Levy in what he'd be willing to spend on replacements. Also think that we won't get as much for some of our outgoings as is being estimated. Certainly on Dempsey, Parker or Adebayor we won't get back what we paid out. Their salaries alone will put most teams off bidding for them so I'm sure we'll be stuck with them.

My hope is that we give opportunities to some of our younger players. Carroll needs to be given more game time, he shows great intelligence whenever he plays, makes space for himself, keeps the ball moving and provides that link between midfield and attack. With more intelligent players in front of him he could easily be the Modric type player we are lacking.

In reality though I expect most of our talented youth to be moved on this summer and next. Instead we will again go bargain hunting around the EPL and Europe bringing in similar type players to what we already have.

I doubt we're going to shift Ade this summer

He's still on £175k or whatever it is, with City subsidising him

Even if City still continue to subsidise him at another club, who's going to pay him £80k a week for what will be one season of good football? Ade would rather stay with us, get paid and run his contract down

Dempsey, Gallas, Friedel, Defoe, Huddlestone, Gomes, Bentley for sure.

The rest we have to keep if we don't get anyone else in.

The Dempsey deal pisses me off. I'd rather we said "Sorry lads, we aren't Chavski or Sheikhty." and saved the money rather than spin this elaborate farce and grab a worse version of Defoe from Liverpool like it was some kind of deal.

In an ideal world I'd be looking to shift Naughton, BAE, Gallas, Livermore, Thudd, Bentley, Defoe, Dempsey and Adebayor

I don't mean to ruin the thread, but we don't seem to have much money for transfers, who would be the supposed replacements and where would the money come from?

As I outlined with a few positions I'd promote from within bringing in players like Danny Rose, Adam Smith and Tom Carroll. No point having a youth academy if we never give the players a chance.

The least I will us to do next summer is to FINALLY sort out our striker situation. IMO Ade and Defoe can go. We should buy 2 strikers who actually can make a difference. Or should we sell Ade and then loan him back...would he be great again? ;) Perhaps Kane and Dempsey can be the 3rd and 4th ones.

And we really do not need Gallas.

Yet Lennon's contribution on the right flank has been almost as important, with the England winger finding the best form of his career under Villas-Boas.
The 26-year-old has netted four times in the Premier League this season, as well as creating six goals, and has blossomed under Villas-Boas' style of play.

Over the last few months, Lennon's contribution when we haven't had the ball has been outstanding. However, there is something wrong somewhere when we struggle to cope with the idea of being without the services of a man whose goal return is so shabby. In fact, I didn't realize it was so shabby this season.

We have a knack of buying players who are perceived to be a bargain, cheap or good value, but unfortunately with everything in life, you generally get what you pay for and footballers are no exception to this.

Holtby, Siguardsson, Dempsey, and Adebayor are prime examples. Yes we got lucky with buying young talent in the form of Bale, Lennon, Sandro and Walker who have proved to be great acquisitions

We've paid big money for Lloris, Vertonghen and Dembele and we now see why we had too

Can't see Adam Smith being ready for more than a bit-part next year. I'd assume we will be looking for a Prem loan as per the Kyles. On that note, whoever suggested a Naughton loan is barking up the wrong tree. He's done that already - I presume he either stays in the squad or is sold. Tom Carroll will surely be in the squad.

I'm happy to have Parker as a back-up. Not fussed if he's on a pretty big wage, because he's a good experienced pro, who will bring more to the squad than just his performances on the field. He just looks knackered right now because he's been playing too much. You offset his extra wages with those of, say, Tom Carroll.

Fryers is not even close to ready from what little I've seen. Ideally Danny Rose will be looking to stay and fight for the #1 LB spot.

Naughton (Out on Loan)
Carrol (Out on Loan)
Gallas
BAE
Bentley
Livermore
Huddlestone
Dempsey
Defoe
Adebayor

Unfortunately, can only see us getting rid of 1 striker in the summer though

If Defoe scores 6 more goals for the club he will be our 5th leading scorer of all time
Really at the start of 2013 that target looked pretty easy, it's still gettable but with his injury and poor form it is looking increasingly likely that he could be sold on in the summer stuck as the 8th highest

Lol at keeping Livermore and selling Parker.

Livermore, Hudd, Naughton can all fuck off asap

Derat is a useless **** and has to be sold.

Keep Benni unless PSG come calling and recall Rose - remember that last season BAE had Bale ahead of him and this season he's had about 7 different players ahead of him during the 7 games he's played for us this season

Adebayor needs to be motivated by the manager.

Bentley, Gomes, Dempsey LOL

The starting point for this is to decide what our ambition is for next season, do we want to challenge for CL places or are we a proper serious club and want to challenge for the title itself? If we are then most of this thread is missing the point.
I know there are people, even Spurs fans and SC'ers who will laugh at that suggestion but we have challenged way above what I suspected this season and now the question is can we improve this team? Can we? Of course we can, christ it wouldn't be that hard, strikers for example, one would improve us so imagine if we got two!!! and that's just for starters.
That said when we talk about keeping some of our worthy but inadequate squad players I would suggest that some of us are not considering us for the title challenge, OK we may not win it but surely we can improve this squad which must put us in the challenge at least.
My thoughts for what they're worth.
Keep Brad, say goodbye to Naughton, Bentley(is he still here?), Tommy Huddlestone, Defoe, Dempsey, Livermore, Khumalo, Gomes, Rose, Townsend and with a fond farewell also to William Gallas. if we can't replace them all then keep Dempsey, Townsend first.
Replace them with better players is that not possible? really?

That's pretty much my list too:

Out - Friedel, Naughton, Gallas, BAE, Hudd, Parker, Livermore, Dempsey, Defoe, Adebayor

Squad:
GK - Lloris, Archer
RB - Walker, Smith
CB - Vertonghen, Kaboul, Dawson, Caulker
LB - New, Rose
DM - Sandro, Holtby
CM - Dembele, Carroll
RW - Lennon, Townsend
AM - Bale, Sigurdsson
LW - New, Youth
Striker - New, New, New/Youth

So buy 4-5 players, possibly (just as an example) - Shaw, Schurrle, Benteke, Michu
