The Webster Clause...

Ok this clause has been talked about several times but I am not sure everybody has completely understands how it really works and how it will effect our players (including myself)

I am going to try and setup Keane and Berbatov on that clause:

Keane - He signed a new contract last year and since he was under the age of 28 when he signed he will have to serve at least 3 years with the club so he will be with us to 2010. Any objections on this?

Berbatov - He has served 3 years after this season so will be able to leave us next summer. But is our option to extend his contract with 2 years like signing a new contract? Does anyone know? If it is like a new signing Berbatov can not leave next summer using the Webster Clause.

in order to activate the Webster the player must

1. make his intentions to activate the Webster by submitting a written request within 15 days of the end of the final game of that season

2. not move to another club within the same federation (country)

heard it on talksportr so must be true!

Yep, both of those are my understanding of the situation. Although, there are plenty of folk on here who know it far better than me.

I was going to ask a question on Webster, so here's as good a place as any.

Basically, it's all about wages right? The idea being that he can buy himself out of his contract?

So, what if a player, let's call him Bimitar Derbatov, has a contract where he's on 50k a week (2.5m a year) + 1m pound bonus each year if he is club top scorer + 3m bonus per year if Spurs finish in the top 4 + 5m bonus if he wins Player of the Season.

Assuming Bimitar has 3 years left on his contract, surely that means it is worth 11.5 million squids a year. Therefore 34.5 million squids in total.

Now, if the player had to buy themselves outof that, it sets a slightly different tone to the whole Webster thing.

Basically, what I'm saying is, would Webster be circumvented with more convoluted and incentivised contracts - even if they were never likely to be achieved?
