Big fish is obviously ade no? Dzeko is on massive wages as well.
I believe the interpretation was not that we need our big fish out of our pond, but that bigger clubs need to loose their interest for us to have a chance.
Don't believe 1 players individual wages is the focus any more, but overall wage expenditure.

That's assuming we get some itk on Delph........ actually scrub that, no one will care anyway and we'll have 30 pages of posts trying to work out how cabbage and Delph can be combined to crack the cryptic
Speaking of cracking the cabbage cryptic; could someone compile 1 post of every serious "solution" proposed? We know that the right guess has been presented in these threads, provide a list mentioning all of them once, and I'm sure we'll see which solution stand out as the correct guess.

Yes re-read it and that makes sense.

Off you go. You're a jolly good fellow taking all this effort.

Are Morgan Schneiderlin and Mario Suarez our only known midfielder targets?

I think this should be our biggest priority by far, and have viewed the position as a big weakness ever since Modric left. I don't think we'll get Schneiderlin, but is Suarez really the next best option? It seems extremely underwhelming considering our top 4 rivals are signing both Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger.

Rabiot & Kramer too, but I believe the consensus is they are not for sale. :(

We've been linked with others too, including Kramer (difficult one to pull off), Rabiot (seemingly dead in the water) and McCarthy (PL proven but still likely to be over-priced). Suarez might not seem like a very sexy purchase, but he does have a lot of big game experience and excellent defensive capabilities to offer us.

Rabiot is 20 years old and has no Premier League experience. Expecting him to come right in and play at a top 4 standard is unrealistic, and I'd hope we've learned our lesson from similar transfers.

I don't know much about Kramer, but I get the vibe he's purely defensive. I think we need a guy who can control the game through the middle ala Modric. Someone like Cabaye would've been great.

Wouldn't even call them rivals in that respect seeing as they are playing on a much higher paying field in terms of revenue to us. Suarez represents a realistic option for a club of our stature.

I think Bentaleb will have that role and grow into it....I think we need a more defensive mid who is able to read the game and protect the defence.

But he reminds me of Capoue, only he is twice as good and twice as energetic. I don't think age or no PL matches should count against Rabiot. I was under the impression he is preferred even over Schneiderlin.

I forgot about McCarthy. Honestly, I don't think he'd be the worst purchase, even if he's expensive, and I'd like to hope he's our backup.

I wouldn't mind targeting Suarez as an option for rotation, but he isn't in the same class as guys like Schneiderlin or Schweinsteiger, nor does he have Premier League experience. If we were to line him up as our starting midfielder this coming season, I'd be feeling pretty pessimistic while our rivals are bringing in guys like Vidal, Schweinsteiger etc.

He needs to be able to switch the ball quickly from defence to attack as well. This was why mason got so many games last season.

Welcome aboard O'T'W,.
As the other posters have said there are other possible targets but we don't yet know that anyone else is signing Schneiderlin.
