I'm sure it's always been a case somewhat of needing to sell players to buy them. War chests are a figment of a journalists imagination. They very rarely exist.

West Ham have a war chest outside the front of their stadium and although it looks like a fibreglass Golden Retriever and says RSPCA on the front, it did fund the transfers of Joe Cole and Benni McCarthy.

Actually Matt, pretty much all info has suggested that, not only do Aston Villa want the deal sorted quickly, we do (Levy does) too.

i don't think its specifically dempsey we need to move, more a case of having a wage budget/celling for the year. I would imagine Ade/Defoe and Clint are all on a decent wage so until one of them is moved on I can't see us buying a CF. I know both Gallas and Bentley has moved on but we have already added Paulinho and I'd imagine with new contract/potential new offer to bale most of that would be taken up. hence why moving on a few fringe players like thuud/parker could be key. Isn't so much an issue with a 20mil transfer, more the 20mil + in wages that comes with it.

It has helped us sign Vertonghen, Lloris, Modric, Berbatov, Sandro, Paulinho etc etc etc

Lloris was the only one of those that dragged on.

I'm a bit disappointed that Dempsey might be off. He's not the best player we've got but he can be a match winner. I would have liked to see him stay and be an option from the bench.

The fact that Villa will want it resolved quickly helps us. Firstly it forces us to be decisive, for a change. If there was an opportunity to play the long game, it would be too tempting for Levy to resist

Secondly, I'm sure AVB has emphasised the importance of having our core business done as soon as possible, for obvious reason as far as he and the team are concerned.

Couple all that with AVB presumably really wanting Benteke and him being only 22 with a big future ahead of him, I think there is every chance we'll get him now.

I appreciate Dempsey for what he is. Personally I think he got way too much stick last season considering the 'big' goals he ended up getting for us.

However if it means helping to get Benteke I have no problem with it ie if AVB is happy enough to do so etc,

problem with us Spurs fans is we all want someone to hate/dislike/moan about in our own team (every team does it) for us it's the likes of Jenas/Dempsey/Ade etc which is a shame really as one of my pet hates especially at games is booing your own!
