I would love it if we got more support over here in the US. Like Asia, if people do support football teams, or loosely follow them, most of the time it's in this order:

1: Man U
2: Chelsea/Arsenal
3: Liverpool

I see plenty of kids and young adults with disgusting Gooner, Man U, and Chelsea tops.
I do bump into the odd fan of other clubs, including Tottenham, but we are FAR behind in popularity.
The Champions League is a big deal here. Often people won't follow the Premier League, but will watch the Champions League matches, and that's where these other clubs get their exposure.

I'd love to see us make a push for US support. There is money here & fans will buy genuine gear, not crappy knock-offs that they often buy out in Thailand & other parts of Asia.

I would like to see Spurs playing annual off-season matches against MLS clubs around the country. Success during our regular season would also help immensely.

COYS!

Could there be more support as apart from Chelski all the other clubs have US owners? I am not saying that's the only reason but do you think that helps?

I would have to say that I don't see the ownership having any bearing. People here tend to gravitate towards the clubs that are doing well when they take interest in the league.

I think John Henry has made the most concerted effort by an American owner. Granted I work across the street from Fenway so see more evidence than I would with Sunderland, Villa, United or Arsenal, whose owners are in Florida, Ohio, Texas and Colorado if I recall correctly. But he has a fairly robust sports channel here called NESN and he heavily promotes Liverpool on that channel, which is dedicated to the Red Sox and the Bruins. But I don't think it has really made any impact. It might if Liverpool get back to the UCL, but at the moment he is doing more courting of current supporters and little in creating future ones.

Misfit, just stop reading altogether. We get all the news and information we need from the TV (and don't call it a telly).

This is an English heavy board so as a fellow American, I advise you to respect the great differences in the language, such as their use of telly (I always thought it was tele so I guess I still have much to learn)

And why is that important? Because telly, tele or TV doesn't make much difference to them. They are cool with all three. They are actually very accommodating of many of the phrases we Americans use on the board.

But for some reason, the locals respond to the term "math" as if you are dick-deep in the raping of their new puppy.

So you'll want to focus on that one as it's way more effective. You will never win the argument but you can change an argument.

Example. This is a conversation that we recently had that I completely made up

Me: Levy Sucks
Misfit: No He Doesn't
Me: You're crazy, dude. He sucks balls.
Misfit: No you're mental, mate. He is a great chairman and he is has not touched anybody's bollocks.
Me: Do the math, he doesn't spend enough
Misfit: I WILL FUCKING KILL YOU AND MAIL YOUR DISMEMBERED BODY PARTS TO YOUR LOVED ONES

Hope that helps (y)

NESN is such a fucking joke sometimes. Especially their "premier league game of the week" which just happens to be whoever liverpool is playing... on tape delay... 3 days after the actual game.

So with the billboards and advertising, how are Tottenham seen in the states? Oh and do they still call us The Spurs as it's something I hate when watching ESPN.

I have a smaller circle living in coastal Rhode Island and watching games mainly in my home. However, I think the Americans I know who follow the PL still consider Spurs as an upstart with a glass ceiling and no real staying power.

Having said that, most still consider Liverpool as missing one or two players before ascending to their natural perch alongside Manu.

The appearance of giant Bale preparing to sweep the whole of Times Square into his benevolent makes the argument that Levy will prefer to keep Bale even if a monster comes in for him. Bale is blockbuster, and aside from his performances on the pitch (though, of course, related to it), he also promises untold status-rising and marketing opportunities. The lad can propel us forward on the pitch, increase our global fan-base and generate money via marketing. I am generally supportive of Daniel Levy's efforts for the club - but he, and we, has really lucked-out with Bale. I'm sure, good business man that he is, Dan knows this.

Mathematics is a subject, it is not the plural of a singular. Maths is a contraction of mathematics. We don't say a math problem, two maths problems, etc., we say a maths problem, two maths problems, etc. You will note that it is the term problem that marks singular and plural. So, of course, anyone who falls down on this simple shibboleth surely does deserve quite a severe beating.
Likewise, we have an old expression I couldn't care less. The purpose of this is to indicate absolute apathy to something. Our American fiends friends have now mangled this expression to read I could care less - which is, of course, nonsense. If you could care less it indicates that you presently care, but the expression itself is intended to indicate absolute apathy. So, you end up expressing the opposite of your meaning. How vulgar.

Always delighted to help out our colonial cousins...but...well, we know you get scared of the dark sometimes but, well, if you will insist on kicking matron out of the cellar, locking the door and turning the lights out, well, these things will happen, won't they old chap. What!

In next week's installment, we will learn our troublesome children just why it is anachronistic to apply statutes intended for a country with a low population surrounding by potentially enemy territory, into to mention possessed of truculent, warlike and armed natives, where the possibility of imminent invasion or insurrection prevails, to a vast country with a huge population whose armed services are unrivaled throughout the World and where literal invasion or insurrection seems remote, to say the least (y)

Yeah but their Bruins coverage is very good. And I don't even support the Bruins.

:wideyed: Who do you support then?

I've been here for so long but never got pulled into the Bruins. I was hoping they won for some folks here but it just didn't mean anything to me. I went through an angry phase with them because some of their fans are so horrible. And so I flirted with Montreal out of that anger. But realized it wasn't genuine.

And then about a year ago I was reading up on potential franchise shifts and Quebec came up and I realized that they were the team. But not as Denver because it upset me that they moved. I was just getting into Hockey when that happened. And I also realized that much like Spurs, where Campbell's betrayal was the catalyst that made me love this club so much, Eric Lindros' holdout made me first notice them. So that's a weird pattern and probably one that deserves some time in major therapy.

So I'm just waiting for them to return. But I have my powder blue hat that I wear all the time :)

Having NBC choose a Spurs player as the poster boy for their coverage is immense. Never would have imagined they would have Bale even though he is the league's best player. I always assumed they'd use Rooney or another player the American masses may recognize (like Tim Howard).

I think it shows our club's stature has not only have grown with Bale's development but we will have a heavy presence on NBC and NBC Sports this term (vs. simply having games streamed online) as NBC will want to highlight the player on their billboard frequently. If so, our TV dollar share will grow even larger next year.

Misfit, just stop reading altogether. We get all the news and information we need from the TV (and don't call it a telly).

Really, here in the United States, the only two marketable foreign footballers in the world at the present moment are Messi and Ronaldo. Apart from that, we get a few American players or MLS has beens (Henry) and Mexican players if you are in a highly populated Latino area of the States.

Rooney is probably the premier league player with the most presence over here in the States and that is not saying much. You'll see him on the cover of Fifa or in a commercial with other footballers. To me, he just doesn't have that star power (or good looks) about him that Bale has.

Everyone over here roots for ManU, Chelsea, Liverpool, or Arsenal. Americans love a winner and when the Premier League started to become more prominent here in the States, it was at the height of the Big 4. A bunch of front runners.

You will always find an easily duped stooge willing accomplice in me, HS (y)

The Scotch-Irish don't bitch and moan about the Hollywood portrayal of them as all being gun-slingers and cattle-rustlers (paraphrase)

1) There's a whole, thread on exactly this, SP. 2) Nice to see you posting again. 3) Been a while.

1) I'm not venturing into those foreign climes - what with their weregolyles and snarflinks and the like <SHUDDERS>. This is local pedantry for local pedants (y)

2) :censored:

3) Not so...I recently posted my expectations for the coming season, available here:

http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/index.php?threads/expectations-for-2013-14.98700/page-3

My very own thread, concerning an interesting, if inherently flawed, examination of our defence, available here:

As well as one or two t'other sundries.
Times so hard, however - I have had a trapped nerve in the arm, making typing difficult, a shed load of work, and the council demanding to see my receipts (that I don't actually get), and all my paperwork which is about six-months behind as I was about 4 months behind and preparing to catch up when the arm went - in lieu of providing same, they are, merrily, charging me Council Tax as though I were a millionaire, and my efforts to placate them by providing evidence of income have been refused as not detailed enough - even though the more complex version will just waste paper to show exactly the same thing. <SIGHS>. Jobsworths, eh :coffee:

My mate (a gooner) used to boast that they were the only team that were called "The" as in The Arsenal.

Until I told him - you don't say The God though do you? You say God. Just as we say Spurs, no need for that "The" shit.

Sweet.

Sharks all the way for me. Loved going to see them play. It was one of the things that really helped me settle in Murica. It was so frigging American and the hot dogs were great. The hot chicks in stands drank beer. All these things are important to a 13 yr-old boy. They also have a connection to the Nordiques in a six degrees type manner wrt the WHA I think.

I still miss the Whale though. Would be so kewl for a small city, especially by US standards, like Hatrford to have a team in the bigs. I suppose we're just lucky that Hockey still retains some semblance of tradition and haven't renamed the Bruins the New England Yellowsox or something shite. Yellowsox Nation yay. /vomit

Still, I hadn't seen you around that much so nice to know your knocking about still.

Edit: Although you can get right back to fucking off again if you put anymore of those vids up like in the other thread.

Other than its totally Canadian :D.

Sharks and Kings are the only two teams I accept south of St. Louis (and not totally sure San Jose is south of St. Louis). The fact that Tampa has a team and Quebec doesn't is a real sore issue for me. And the Kings only because they were the first wave of expansion in 67. Otherwise, I don't think they have the same gusto as San Jose's support. People often refer to this divide as needing to be the Mason-Dixon, but of course that would mean the Blues, Caps and Avalanche would be out (and while bitter I do believe Denver deserves a team). And San Jose gets a similar nod as being the Seals slot.

The Bruins fans want the Whalers back so bad. It was a great rivalry for them. Having been to the Civic Center, it's understandable why the NHL left.

Not to worry. Sometimes it needs surgery, sometimes it just rights itself over time - mine seems to be righting itself. But I can truly empathise with the sleeping thang - not matter what angle you put your arm, you wake up in extreme pain within minutes. First three weeks I hardly selpt a wink. Poor dab...hope she's alright now.

N.B. - Yeah, the vid thang...it's a bit much, innit
