Whilst I did watch Gazza, I only really remember watching from the 91 semi-final onwards, so can't include him in my list of best players I don't think.

For me it's:

Modric
Bale
King
Berbatov
Ghaly
Ghaly ? Really?

This cant be right. A huge generation gap between your best 5 players but still no hoddle and mackay?
I think I agree with your statement.... yet I couldn't drop any of the others.... can we have a top 5 and 2 on the bench?

Yeah I can't judge players that I've only seen on grainy videotape. So from 1985, my first game at the Lane....

1. Hoddle
2. Gazza
3. King
4. Modric
5. Klinsmann

4 and 5 really tough... Bale, Teddy, VDV, Waddle, Ginola, all hard to leave them out...

Sorry but much as I love and respect Gary Mabbut, certainly one of our all-time great players, I find the idea of him (or anyone) keeping Dave Mackay on the bench is a bit weird.

I can't think of a single player I'd pick in any team ahead of Mackay if winning the game is the objective. Which it is.

He may not be the world's best player ever, but he quite probably is Tottenham's.

Jennings
Greaves

Undecided between Gilzean, Ardiles, Waddle, Gascoigne and Bale for 5th spot.

Indeed., my opinion about your opinion.

So, Mackay v Mabbutt; what was Mabbutt better at than Mackay that would make him your choice?

Not arguing for the sake of it but genuinely interested.
Maybe nothing, but was part of the 91 FA cup winning team which was one of my happiest times as a Spurs fan!

In my lifetime Lineker, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Bale, King. Although special mentions to Sheringham, Berbatov, Modric, Ginola, Mabbut, Klinsmann

I won't comment on anyone pre 1981 because I think it's plain daft to list people I haven't seen play at the time. It's small comfort considering our lack of success over the last 30 odd years but we certainly have had some of the league's best players.

1) Hoddle - The most talented British player I've ever seen.

2) Gazza - Never the same after his stupidity in the Cup final, but a 23 year old Gazza remains the second most talented British player I've ever seen.

3) Clemence - I doubt many people would put a goalkeeper in their top five but Clemence was world class, even though he was arguably past his best when he signed for us.

4) Sheringham - The best forward I've seen play for us. Had no pace and his first touch control wasn't great either, but he was superb in the air, was ahead of everyone else in his head and was a fantastic finisher and first time passer. In 94/95 Jurgen got the plaudits but I thought at the time, and still do, that Teddy outshone him in almost every department. It irks me today that he only obtained recognition when he went to Utd, by which time he was past his best.

5) Ardiles - A better version of Luka Modric. Actually wasted a bit at Spurs as he was best playing further forward, but because of Hoddle he actually spent much of his time sitting deeper for us.
