Obika on song for Spurs XI

Jon Obika hit four goals as our Spurs XI beat Chelsea 5-3 in a training ground friendly on Wednesday afternoon.

The striker currently on loan and preparing for promotion play-offs with Millwall in League One scored a hat-trick in the first half as we dominated at Spurs Lodge.

He also had a goal disallowed as we led 3-0 at half-time before adding the fourth in the second half. John Bostock completed the scoring.

It took just five minutes for Obika to finish a one-on-one chance for the opener before scrambling home the second from close range.

He completed his hat-trick just after the half-hour when he latched onto a pass from Dean Parrett and lobbed home over the advancing goalkeeper

Jacob Mellis pulled a goal back for Chelsea but Obika soon restored the three-goal cushion with powerful downward header from Parrett's free-kick (pictured top).

Bostock drilled home from 30 yards to make it 5-1 before two fine goals from Gael Kakuta and Jeffrey Bruma made it a final 5-3 scoreline.

Technical Co-Ordinator Tim Sherwood reported: "It was excellent. The game was played at a nice, high tempo and it was a great exercise for us.

"I thought we moved the ball really well at times and the application of the players was first-class.

"Adam Smith was outstanding, Calum Butcher was outstanding, Steven Caulker as well - but we all know what they can do.

"Jon Obika scored four goals and wasn't even the best performer out there! He certainly knows how to score a goal though."

Spurs: Thomas; Smith, Butcher, Caulker (Durojaiye, 75), Byrne (Cox, 75); M'poku (Dawkins, 60), Parrett, Mason (Luongo, 75), Townsend; Bostock; Obika.

Bostock's strike sounds special. His goal against Charlton at the valley was classs.

Obika seems to score a lot of goals but people who have seen a lot of him tend to say they dont think he is anything special. From the few games I have seen of Andros both on loan and in the youth cup, he excites me the most. Although if bostock can develop his defensive game, would be great to finally see someone with great physical attributes like jenas, that can also do something with a football.

Also musnt forget caluker. Had a great season at yeovil and looks a top prospect.

Obika - the next Lee Barnard??
Seems to get plenty of goals, could be the next Lineker. Have to say, was very impressed with him when he played against Shaktar and was unlucky not to score.

As I recall, I dont think he's ever really been first choice either at Yeovil or Millwall. Had a blitz of goals at the back end of the 2008-2009 season that kept Yeovil up, but never really secured a starting eleven slot in his second loan spell there, and seems to come off the bench a lot for Millwall. Still has plenty of time to progress though, I think he just needs to play an entire season on loan somewhere, as he is clearly too good for these training ground friendlies.

Interesting - two triallists in there in Thomas and Luongo (Australian midfielder). Anyone know anything about the keeper? Don't know who Dawkins is. Can't be Simon can it? He left last summer.

Seems a fairly ignorant article - I can't see anyone there we are looking to "offload".

Ye thats what I thought at first. Why the hell would we actively be looking to sell our youngsters? Then it goes on to talk about how we want to send them out on loan next season and saw this as a chance to put them on show for managers in the lower leagues.

Interesting that a few premier league managers were there - wonder if Bostock or Livemore would get enough games at someone like Wolves, West Brom or Newcastle (Chris H must know Livemore and Bostock pretty well). If they were guaranteed starts the experience would be very useful.

Much as we all respect him I'd say poor old Chris H will be sacked by Xmas so not sure if we want any of our youngsters going up there
