I'm really surprised at the amount of people who think that Basel played really well and we didn't. Don't get me wrong, they did play well but they weren't miles better then us, it was a pretty even encounter overall. At no point did they dominate us, their attacks and breaks forward where more down to us gifting it to them through poor decisions and/or individual errors rather then them playing well. They had Salah on the wing who had a good game and he caused BAE and Verts a few problems but I reckon he was the only one creating opportunities for them that where not as a result of our mistakes.

If you watch the game, during the first half, we where the better team the goals apart. For the first half an hour they hardly had a sniff of the ball and we where knocking it around really well regardless of the good pressing that they where doing. The first goal was because we had a collective brain fart and because there was a lucky deflection during the approach that caught our defenders off guard to let them take the lead and again, four minutes later it was a case of poor marking on a set piece on our part that they scored the second rather then them scoring through a great attack. Even after going two down we didn't let our heads get down, we rallied and pulled one back. The rest of the first half after their two goals was pretty equal. Good fast paced football from both teams.

The second half was pretty even until the last ten minutes or so. That's the only point in the game that they started to get hold of the ball and knock it about us and string more then a few passes together. And that I would put down to us being tired rather then them playing better. We where also playing with ten men for most of this period . Apart from that last ten minutes, most of their forays forward where because they where capitalising on our mistakes, not through creating lots of clear cut chances for themselves and them playing excellent football and making us look shit.

We done that to ourselves, they didn't do it, not by a long shot. We where making lots of silly little mistakes which they capitalised on rather then fashioning good chances for themselves. I'm not saying they didn't create anything themselves but if it wasn't for us shooting ourselves in the foot every five minutes then they wouldn't have had nearly as many chances as they did.

They where also willing to shoot a hell of a lot more then we where. They weren't scared to have a go where as we didn't seem to have anyone who wanted to shoot. I wonder if that has contributed to the impression that we where getting done because they did have a lot of shots. Take the first half for example, watch it again and up until they scored the first goal, we had all the possession, but not even one shot I think, whereas they had hardly any possession but still managed about five shots at goal.

Anyway, I didn't see anything about them that made me think we wont be able to do them at their place. If that was the best that they can offer then all we have to do is put together a game with no mistakes. If it wasn't for our mistakes yesterday we would have beaten them. Easily.

The game was overall a pretty even affair by the end of it. It was a case of us being good on the ball but really poor off of it. It was a mixture of them playing well and us making lots of individual mistakes and we still drew with them. Imagine if its us playing well and them making all the mistakes at their place?!

Our destiny is in our own hands.
