I read this optimistic hope in a lot of threads - but I'm curious to know how the posters would define "coming good" this season.

Avoiding relegation ? Mid-table finish ? Top-4 ? Winning a Cup ? Winning a game ? Establishing a first-choice starting XI ? Anything else ?

Personally I'd regard "coming good" as seeing the team stop being one "in a false position"; "loaded with potential"; and "in a position to challenge the top 4" and turns into one that moves out of that false position; fulfils its potential; and actually starts challenging the top 4.

Make that Top 5 or 6(depending how Villa progresses)

We are being left behind by our rivals and for me, coming good this season would be a top 10 finish at the very least.

As things stand I would be happy with seeing:

(i) - The team perform solidly as a unit and scoring goals regularly.

(ii) - I would like to see ALLOT more clean sheets.

( iii) I want to see Bent, Pav & Campbell link up well and score goals before the Jan window

( iv) - I want to see more strength and steel brought into the midfield and another top class striker in the Jan window

(v) - A good cup run would be nice

I'm Honestly not to bothered as to where we finish (as long as we're not in the bottom 3 obviously), I would hope 7-8th! That would be good in my eyes.

I think at this stage (taking our terrible start into account) 'coming good' will be to start to perform strongly and remain consistant over the course of the rest of he season in the league, being hard to beat and winning most of the games against the teams we 'should' beat as well as starting to get results from the teams you would not expect to.

I suppose from here the league finish would need to be between 6th and 8th to have come good.

As well as this we will need another cup success, what with the Carling and Uefa hanging in the balance in the next few games they could be vital to us coming good this year.

Although I suppose if we did exit those cups we would have just 2 fronts to fight on and this may help the league and FA cup, although obviously the more cups we are in the more chances we have of success.

I agree with you Evolution. I'm not that really bothered about the place we finish in but the team's unity and performance. So as soon as I see our players playing as a team and scoring, maybe not lots of goals but at least one more than opposition, than it'll all be sound and good for me.

It's one thing grading success on final league position or trophies but these difficult targets generally fail to recognise that other teams are trying to achieve the same as we are.

Each year, the Premiership gets stronger and it invariably means we can only ask that the club try and progress year on year, game to game.

We need to build and develop this squad into a formidable force. Whatever position the club find themselves in, all that can be asked are for weaknesses to be recognised and prevented whilst strengths be exploited to their full potential.

By the end of the season, I want us to be notably building towards playing regularly as a cohesive unit, challenging in every department, every game. Preferably with the entertainment we are famous for.

I don't see top class players in any position joining us in January. We have to rely on our current players to turn things around, I think they can but it needs to start soon.

Anyone who thinks a top 4 or 5 is possible are deluded IMHO, Its gonna be another season of mid table battles, right now i'd be happy with 17th!

Yep. I'd be pleased to see some decent performances and avoiding relegation. At the moment it's hard to find three teams worse than Spurs, so I'd take staying up.

I'm gonna bump this thread in January when we win 10 on the bounce...

And again in May when we've won 2 from the UEFA Cup, FA Cup or Carling Cup

Ramos will be god, but Bent will still be s***

Playing the Tottenham way again. And WHL being a fortress again. Those are what i consider as "coming good" for Spurs. With those two things we will win games and be succesful again.

avoiding relegation - the crowd backing the team and maybe just maybe another cup final

Yes top 4 to 5 finishes this season are the rants of the deluded, but being happy with 17th is equally so.

Things have started off badly yes, but we will be well clear of the relegation zone by xmas.

Would you really take a 17th place finish if it were offered to you now? I hope the people in charge and playing for the club have more confidence and ambition then you do if so.

(you also contracdict yourself from initally claiming we will be in a midtable battle and them declaring yourself to be happy to finish 17th, so I suspect you are just being neagtive because you are frustrated at our start rather then actually thinking we will be lucky to stay up)

What happened to 'Fazza is always optimistic' is that an ironic statement?

I think its just a poor start. Once we gel and kick in and avoid silly mistakes and nervousness and play with flair and motivation and winning games, i think it'll be a top 7 finish and any two of EUFA, CC or FA.

Being a cautious person by nature I would actually take 17th if offered it as I absolutely can't see us making the top 10 this season, so better to be safe than sorrry

however my actual early season prediction was 14th and I'll stick with that of course

for this season, I would see coming good as seeing a bit more cohesion in the team; a bit more confidence; seeing interlink play improve drastically and giving the top 4 teams a run for their money in the league matches.

i would take mid-table this as a platform for progressing next season

yeah i agree, by the week-end we'll be out of the cc and would have lost another league game.
