I heard on the guardian podcast the other day that 30% of the players currently playing in Serie A weren't born when he made his debut.

A modern legend of the European game.

Wow. I have nothing but footballing respect for Totti. He deserves a huge round of applause from the whole community when he finishes.

My favourite player when I was in primary school, would always be my first signing on PES master league despite them always criminally under-rating him.

The term legend is bandied about very loosely these days (and I appreciate some of those times is just to show a greater level of appreciation) but in Totti's case, the term is fully deserved and I don't think there is a better word out there to encapsulate him as a player and professional.

So silky, all about ridiculous technique, fiercely loyal, so good looking you wouldn't begrudge your bird cheating on you with him... Legend.

A true legend of the game, and also a personification of the fact there is far more to football than trophies. David May has won more ffs, but I doubt there will be many players more fondly remembered than Totti. Puts modern scrote bags like Hazard into perspective, and could probably still school him at 5-a-side.

Great player.
The only time I've been able to convince my wife to join me at WHL was when we played Roma in a pre season because she loves Totti. Unfortunately for her he was injured so didn't play. Did I know this beforehand??

The only player in the world to have been an active Player in the database of every Championship Manager/Football Manager game from the very first release to today. 25 years a CM/FM legend!

(Oh yeah, and he was alright in real life too, so I gather.)

End of an era, total legend.

Having said that, I reckon they could get another couple of seasons out of him if they embalmed him...

What's the betting Rma retire the number 10 shirt...

Italian squad numbers make my OCD cringe... :hungover:

I don't imagine they'll retire it, probably leave it vacant like Juventus did after Del Piero left.

I feel like number 10 is a too iconic number in world football in general to retire, regardless of who that player was. Had he had 23 or something like that it would make more sense.

It amazes me that Phil Neville and Emile Heskey have more international caps. Not sure if it says more about England's quality or Italy's managers.
