With us being linked to all manner of players so far. Does anyone else think that we've decided to go global and not just just buy very good players, but the best players from certain countries/contenents and thus making the tottenham brand more recognisable throught the world.

the question is do you think this is a very good move by the club and also very good marketing ploy, or would you rather the club stuck to the buying british policy we've had for the last few years?

Well no, the main question is have Tottenham intended to do what you said at all, and I'm thinking that's nonsense. We're not gonna aim to buy the "best" player from a country for any reason other than the fact that that player is the best player we're able to get for the position they play in. I don't think there's any politics involved.

does that mean we will buy the best player from USA and the best player from thailand and the best player from kazakstan?

I still think the main strategy is to get them cheap and still be able to re-coup our outlay if not make a profit when we decide to sell. There may be a slight twist to this strategy if we can buy a couple of really established players that can help us to the next level if their costs in both transfer fees and wages are not too exhorbitant.

Have to agree.

There is absolutely no point in buying superstars to promote the Spurs brand around the world whilst we languish in mid table and win the CC. It just simply would not work. What Spurs are doing is simply trying to buy the best players they can to try to compete with/break into the big 4. Only then when we are competing for major trophies can Spurs think about marketing the brand more worldwide.

I agree, there is little if any politics involved.

What has happened has beena fairly natural and organic develop in our transfer policy as a result of numerous factors.

The buy young, whether british or otherwise, is something that I think most of the big clubs, and the smaller ones for different reasons, do to some degree becuase it makes financial sense. Young players generally cost less and are on lower wages. If they become stars then that is good for the team and if they are eventually sold they will make a profit after having improved the team. If they do not develop in the way that was hoped for what ever reason, they will probably not make a loss and if so it will be a fairly small one. It is a calculated gamble that can pay massive divdends, ala Carrick, but has limited risk, ala Davenport. Even players such as Jenas or Dawson, who cost roughly 7 million and 4.5 million respectively are limited risk purchases. Jenas would probably command a similar fee if not a bit more and Dawson would probably also get a bit more if he were sold.

We have moved on, despite the turmoil and resultant poor league form of last season. We have greatly raised our profile and are now seen as an upwardly mobile and ambitious club who not only are prepared to give young talents the cahnce that they may not get at Man U, Chelsea et al, but is also prepared to invest in ready made players of the highest quality that we can attract, eg Modric.

Our early policy under Arnesen could only get us so far unless we were extremly lucky and I imagine that everyone invloved at the decision making end of the club would have realised that and thus it is likely that they envisaged a two-tier policy over a period of time that would be adjusted according to the way the club performed on the pitch.

A large factor in shaping our changing attitude as personified buy the purchse of Woodgate, is the change in manager. Ramos, unlike Jol, would have without doubt made certain demands upon the board before he agreed to take the job and one of those would have been his being able to buy the best players that we could afford.

The board are well aware that we must get into the champions league, even if only once, if we are to progress as a team and as a business. The stadium will be influenced by it, the price that any potential buyers will be shaped by it.

Levy will obviously do it as sensibly as he can, being a frugal businessman, but do it he must. We are not as far off as last season made it look and Ramos will have made it quite clear to those who he needed to that unless we invest in ready-to-go players of the highest calibre in the right positions we will not make that step up.

Despite the criticism he receives, particularly in the light of the Jol fiasco and the poor season, I genuinely trust Levy. He has turned our club around in a way that all others have failed to do in the past 25 years. He will do what he can to get us success by buying the best players we can, and we have certainly spent alot of money, but he will not risk our future. He will get us a new stadium, but only when it is sensible to do so.

We are as well run as any club and this is reflected in the changing transfer policy that we pursue and I for one am fully supportive of it and I think our development over the past few years backs that view far more than any negative view that has been put forward.

Levy didn't get where he is today without taking a few risks along the way. He's been playing it safe the last few seasons to establish stability and ensure the basic ingredients are there.

That's done now, so I expect something a little different very soon.

Only time will tell..

I agree, but i have to say, whatever you post, whether i agree with it or not, will always be superfuckingcool, 'cos i'm picturing Bruce Willis typing it.

Please don't ever type anything retarded as it will spoil my illusion that he posts on SC.

Cheers

In a word, no.
Hopefully we just look for the best players and talent around no matter where it comes from (non-EU rules notwithstanding.)
Don't think the best players from the Cook Islands and Andorra would really help make us top 4 somehow (sorry to any world-class players from those countries that may have slipped my mind!)
