Uefa Champions League Qualification Rules Debate

It seems many of us have mixed views regarding the rules & targets set out to achieve qualification for entry into the following seasons Champions League, even more so at the moment as we could fall victim to the rules if Chelsea were to win the Champions League Final on Saturday evening.

Personally myself i believe that if Uefa want & think it is only right for a team that wins the competition to be able to defend the trophy the following season that it should not come at the expense of any rival team that has finished above them in their own domestic league.

I dont see why we should be left sweating on Bayern Munich having to defeat Chelsea to confirm our qualification next season, & lets be fair it isnt the first time these circumstances have arose & i dont agree that when they changed the rules after the Liverpool/Everton debacle it has made it fairer on the clubs that have genuinely qualified via League position.

Under the current rules you could win the Champs League 10 seasons in a row & finish in the lower half of your division each time & never qualify properly, that is ridiculous !! If Uefa want the winners to defend the title then there should always be an automatic spot reserved for them & if that meant the following season 5 teams could represent one country then so be it. I cant see what the problem is as it can easily be resolved in the play-off stages & be virtually unoticed.

Sort it out UEFA !!! Its not our fault Chelsea have had a crap season !!!

If Chelsea win then they are Champions. They deserve to be there next year more than United, Arsenal or us.

It will suck balls if it happens and I want Bayern to win desperately. But if Chelsea win, they deserve to be there. 4th place in any league should not trump a real champion.

I think they made the right decision when they implemented this rule.

And, at the end of the day, if this happens, UEFA didn't cause us to drop a 10 point lead in the standings, a two goal lead at Woolwich and a pristine chance to jump to third against Villa. We have only ourselves to blame for this predicament.

It is a bit of a joke but then Uefa are a joke, always have been and always will be. It's like the Europa League, why not let the winners of that have a chance at the CL? Oh because Uefa like having their "select" elites in the competition year in year out. I imagine everyone at Uefa wants Chelsea to win*****, because they are a "bigger" club in terms of CL history.

*****Edit - Christ, WANTS CHELSEA TO GO IN THE COMPETITION OVER US BECAUSE THEY HAVE MORE HISTORY IN THE CL.

Hopefully Bayern do it for us, I have more confidence in them than I did Barcelona (there was just something weird that night, even after Terry being sent off, it just felt like the Inter Milan Barcelona game a few years back).

I totally agree that they should allow the winner of the Europa enter the following Champions League. Although Malaga supporters probably don't at this moment :D

Whilst i must add to that the trap door into the Europa League for the 3rd placed Champs League Group Stage rule should of been scrapped years ago - it totally under values the tournament & in my calculation denies 32 more European teams playing the tournament to supplement this.

What are you talking about? Bayern are 4th overall in titles and will go past Liverpool with a win this weekend. Chelsea aren't even on the same planet as Bayern.

.....But Bayern are in next years CL no matter what;)

hahaha

Not bigger in European Cup History or European Champions League history.

Happy, Omar...I think he was taking the piss out of Chelsea's parvenus pretensions, not saying he really thought they were bigger than Bayern.

Exactly this. When it was Everton in this position I had that view - and if it were Arsenal in this position instead of us I'd still have that view.

The way the Champions League is set up obviously suggests a mini-best of the best tournament. We out-performed Chelsea in the domestic league over 38 games.

I'm not throwing my toys out of the pram about this as we all knew this was a possibility before a ball was kicked this season...but it doesn't stop it from being a typical UEFA fuck-up.

At the very least there should be a play-off between the team that wins the Champions League, and the team that finishes 4th (or whatever position relates to the relevant domestic league).

I've got no problems with the rules. They made their call a few years ago and we have to deal with it.

However, if I had my way after the Everton/Liverpool issue of a few years back, I would have made that ruling stick - ie the winner of the CL would have a spot, as would 4th, but the winner would have to go through the qualifiers. Personally, I think it's the only fair way.
