Can't they all win it?

Isn't it supposed to be Sports Personality of the Year? So it go to the best sports personality and not necessarily the best sports person?

Bradley for me as nobody British has ever wont the tour let alone the first in 70 odd years or whatever like Murray, but still, if any of them won it I really don't think it matters and they've all achieved amazing feats. I think they should just do one big collective award for evrybody this year, i'm not sure there even needs to be a figure head.

it hasn't been a personality contest for years, more achievement

So close this year, but for me it has to be Bradley Wiggins. He has been around for such a long time and has consistently achieved. This year he has been able to step out of the shadow of Chris Hoy and become a mega star in his own right..

But I expect it will be Mo Farrah or Jessica Ennis that wins.

Wiggo for me, for the same reasons as listed above.

The 3 real big achievements, and by big I mean ground breaking, were Wiggo then Murray and Farah tied just behind him. Ennis and co achieved something very special no doubt but these three pushed it on a little more.
Ennis will figure in the final 3 though I think given she has been marketed as the golden girl of the games for the past two years and she delivered.

Rory is currently going off at 200/1 with some bookies ( incidently Wiggo is evens, Murray 2/1 and Farah 3/1 ) and with the Ryder Cup still to come that offers a pretty decent e/w value bet I'm sure you will agree!

If that were the case Wiggo would have no competition.

This is a hard question for me and I would make my choice purely on my knowledge of the sports. Wiggins' achievements are no doubt great, but I've played & coached tennis for years so I have to go for Murray. I was screaming at the TV when Mo won both his golds, though, so he'd be up there.

If they can find some way of giving a joint one this year I wouldn't complain. Seems unfair that some of these great sportspeople won't win it!

Wiggo for me, no real contest. A sizeable distance ahead of everyone else in his sport at the minute.

On achievement alone Wiggo wins hands down.

1st Overall Tour de France
1st Overall Paris-Nice and 1st in the Points classification
1st Overall Tour de Romandie
1st Overall Critérium du Dauphiné
Gold Medal Oylmpic Road Race - Time Trial

Now in a single season winning one of the above would be seen as a career highlight but to win all of them is a phenomenal achievement above anything else a British athlete has done this year.

Wiggins, Murray and Farrah's achievements have an historical resonance which add weight to their already superb performances, so I'd put them down in that order. Jessica Ennis did of course have to compete with all the added pressure heaped on her by Sebastian Coe calling her the face of the games, and although while heptathlon is the toughest event in female athletics, it is something which we have fared pretty well at in recent history. I'll be voting for Wiggins, but if the BBC allowed everyone two votes I'd like to vote for David Weir as well.

As for what actually happens, I can't see past Wiggo winning, partly because the cycling fraternity will vote for him en mass, but also as his public persona and popularity has just gone through the roof this summer.

The list this year is going to be phenomenal, there will be a fair few with very legitimate claims that won't make the shortlist. I think these will all be definites;

Bradley Wiggins
Chris Hoy
Jessica Ennis
Mo Farah
Ben Ainslie
Andy Murray
David Weir
Ellie Simmonds

Which would leave two places left for the likes of Laura Trott, Jason Kenny, Greg Rutherford, Charlotte Dujardin, Alastair Brownlee, Nicola Adams and Rory McIlroy. You could quite easily have a shortlist of about twenty this year.

If it wasn't for Fred Perry it might be Murray. But seen as Wiggins was the first Brit ever to win the Tour it has to be him.

It's voted for by the public isn't it? Normally with that the case I'd say big public figure like Mo or Ennis would win but seen as Cav won it last year the public definitely know cycling and their sport.

And I really don't get all the rubbish last year about no women in the shortlist. No woman achieved anything worthwhile last year. Get over it.

Ellie Simmonds has to be in the running. Murray, Weir or Wiggins with Wiggins the winner as my guess.

It'll depend which group of supporters mobilises best on the day to get the votes in. Can't see the tennis crowd doing so. Odds on Wiggins I'd say. (Not that he doesn't deserve it!)

This. Maybe Kerri-Anne Payne and Becky Adlington could have been nominated as they won World Championships in their respective events, but then swimming doesn't have a sufficiently high profile other than in Olympic years. Not that that should diminish their achievements. You could probably have swapped either of them for Alastair Cook or Amir Khan.

You might be surprised- whenever there is a Welsh or Scots person in the running their respective countries usually get all the vote out.
Recent winners Giggs and Hoy??? Get yer money on Murray for me.

If that's the case then surely the Scottish vote will be split between Murray and Hoy?
