Average possibly, indeed probably, but highly useful nevertheless, so leave out the cheap sneers, Dan. There have been plenty worse than Jamie, and some unsung regulars in the glory days were no better—Phil Beal springs to mind, as does Johnny Pratt. Much as we'd love a squad of galacticos, a versatile journeyman or two is very handy, and a whole shedload more use than the show ponies that numpties get onanistic over.

I doubt he particularly wants to come back. Barring some kind of cataclysm, he's going to be lucky to make the bench; four years ago he'd have been a shoo-in when Davids and Tainio got crocked. It shows how much we've moved on when a player half the EPL would be happy to have as a regular starter can't get a look-in.

Indeed Phil Beal after losing his RB role to Kinnear towards the end of the 67 campaign due to injury, he had a hard time getting appearances in the next 2 or 3 years. but I remember him playing very well as he gained experience after being converted to central defender.

I think Sandro in the summer would be better, if he arrives July 1st he'll have a full pre season and be able to hit the ground running. If he joins now it could be a while till he is up to speed, which may be more harm than good.

Just don't throw him off the deep end until next year, if we get him now we can get him used to England and his teammates in training instead of having to start in July?

It is the same as Naughton and Walker last summer, we get them in then, see what they can do and not rush them into any first team action. Nobody is screaming for either one of these guys to start every week. Same for Sandro except he will need much longer to get used to life in England as it will be a pretty change from Brazil so the quicker we get him in the quicker he can start games for us.

It also provides cover that we are missing as we really only have 3 central midfielders and Jenas is always injuried (IMO) so he might get a spot start and no one will think he needs to be Lampard or Gerrard in his first year.
