OED

Isn't paying massive wages to players a big part of the reason WH are in the shit?

It does seem O'hara wont be with us long term but we're short in the middle at the moment.

Of course it is. Tid meaning fond, bit meaning well...bit.

We just bastardised our own language and titbit became part of the language because people get it wrong so often.

(You were agreeing with me, right IOMLS?)

As for Wet Spam - the headline across the back of one of the freebie papers last night was "West Ham get £8 million to spend on THREE players".

Wow. How can we possibly compete with their spending power!

O'hara i'd like to see stick around, he has a bright future.

RvN to the Hammers is an interesting idea, unless that paypacket is subsidised by free porn i don't see how they can make the numbers up.

I've always wondered why footballers who are so good don't have a little more confidence in their skills - for example, a striker wants £80,000 a week because he is that good at scoring goals, surely would find more satisfaction in a £40,000 a week pay packet with massive bonuses available? Yeah, i know it's the sports equivalent of commission but it would make a lot more sense, and when you look back at your pile of cash at the end of the year, if you are that good you could end up with it averaging out at a fair bit more than that £80k you wanted originally...

If i was in charge i think i'd be offering contracts based on performance a lot more than on reputation. Maybe i'd miss out on a few but they would be the ones in it for the money. Players who are good at what they do and enjoy doing it well, those are the ones i want wearing our shirt.

Earn your money, don't just turn up and collect a cheque at the end.

Oh for the days of people owning dictionaries! It's remarkable what interesting titbits can be found in them.

Get an English dictionary people. Then look it up. Then if you still want it to be tidbit, you can always emigrate to the US. (see also Al Pacino's link)

With regard to RVN, our problem is not using available wingers when we know they're needed (Rose and Giovani on the bench - Krancjar replaced by Keane - the same type of error as against Hull). If we used those available then our strikers might get some service from the byline rather than hoofed from our own half. With this service, we wouldn't be kidding ourselves we suddenly need strikers, when we've already got four.

Courage Harry, Courage!

Did we not steal the US word? Considering its construction?

ah well - we await stoof's retraction :)

glad to see the title is now 'titbits'

As it should be, bearing in mind that I wrote it and I'm usually correct.

As for West Ham being in for Ruud, I believe it's a 3 horse race - no pun intended. Spurs, Stoke and West Ham. Although the feeling from ThatchamYid is this was a done deal a few days ago for Spurs. Just waiting on Pav being moved on.

Of course I was agreeing with you. It's been tidbits since before Americans could speak English as far as I know. According to etymology dictionary the word origin is from 1630-1640.

Anyway even if West Ham can stump up the money for the wages, why the hell would van Nistelrooy go there?

It's a known fact that Van Nistelrooy is a Hammer and has been since a child, when he used to cheer on Bobby Moore from the terraces.

He also has a Stoke scarf.

How about we let Wet Spam have RVN and we get a copy of the Oxford dictionary?

I established pretty early on that titbit was the correct British wording, hence using it. However, I'm not sure the ITK is that irrelevant to bring up the English language and how to use it.

i'd be a lot more worried about him going to liverpool or arsenal than stoke or wet spam. both need a forward and both will be perceived as a better destination than us. i know he's ex-manure, but at this stage i don't think he'd care about that too much.

would love to see him here, but i still think the best bet is he ends up abroad due to tax etc. last few years of his playing career, he's going to want to make as much as possible.

He want's to be part of the World Cup squad, though, which is what his agent has said.
