When he joined Spurs it was as the French U-21 Captain but certainly not the finished article yet he found himself more often then not covering the vacancy at the centre of our defence in the continuing absence of King.

He went through a really steep learning curve - Premiership standards - big club aspirations - little experience and little team confidence or leadership in its collective predicament.

His transfer to Portsmouth has given him a platform to mature under the guidance of a leader or two - Distin and Campbell - and he is certainly worthy of a squad position in our Club.

I say this as both Woodgate and King struggle for the consistency of playing time that a solid defence demands.

If we dont buy someone of the quality of G Cahill or my choice S Kjaer, we should be giving a player like D Dervite some game time, before his contract runs out and he moves for nothing

if this is true i think a loan back to pompey till the end of the season would do him and us a favourite. let him get some much needed experience under his belt.

Its an interesting one for sure. He had raw potential but was thrown in the deep end. I dont think he is world class or capable of reaching that - too much power, not enough finesse.

Unless we are writing one of Ledders or Woody off, I cant see the value of getting any defender in who will want to play the majority of games. If the two aforementionned are still out you have to get past Daws and Bassong, if not you are probably 5th choice.

Unless its a deal for 2 or 3 mill, I dont think its a good idea.

With ledley back playing now surely we dont need him do we?

Unless harry sees him as CM cover also?? Was it hary who played him in CM for pompey or donkey adams?

Why, why why, he was crap 1st time round and now he's playing in a team that leaks goals for fun.

They've only let in 9 more than us. Considering how much defending they have to do because they carry hardly any forward threat it's a pretty decent stat.... not sure it's leaking goals but if it is we must be dribbling them??

I would think its because:

-We need experienced PL cover
-We cant afford to risk spunking 10+ mil on players we are unsure of making PL grade (Kjaer)
-We'll probably get him for naffall. Portsmouth save wages and probably owe us shit loads anyways.

IMO i dont really want him back. But i can see why it might happen. Im sure he's not our 1st choice.

I won't be dissapointed with his signing. He's a player with a lot of potential, who as people have said was thrown into the deep end at spurs and never really recovered. He's looked fairly good in a poor pompey team, and has certainly developed as a player. He may lack positional quality but this is something that can be coached and refined. What he does offer is pace, power and decent technique with the ball. An ideal player to rotate with dawson, bassong, king & woodgate (when fit?!) IMHO.

He's not what we need right now. Someone with more experience would surely be the best bet.

I said this might happen towards the end of the window if we cant get our other targets. It makes sense. Pompey owe us money, and its easier for them to send us a player instead. We could do with another centre back as cover. And we're unlikely to get a good quality one mid-season (especially this late in the window). So we bring Kaboul in until the summer, when we can hopefully search for a 1st team centre back.

We have to remember though that he is still fairly young for a defender. Plus i always thought he had the credentials to play in front of the defence. He reminds me a bit of Rafael Marquez, who happens to be better suited to DM than CB. Maybe Harry can see something in him, and might just get the best out of him.

Pompey have apparently cleared all debts to other clubs according to the premier league

Thats what I heard, and apparantly that is why the transfer embargo has been lifted, for loan and free players.

Perhaps it's a straight swap for Jamie O, with Younes coming back the other way

The moral of the story is, don't say anything bad about the club.

Or it may be awkward when we buy you back.

We need a defender, so why not. The one thing I like about him is that he seems to have a bit of character about him, a bit of something. We need that in our team we need someone who will rise to the challenge. It would appear that maybe he can do that and being captain would suggest that he has that pedigree.

I think positional sense comes with age, I don't see him as being any worse than micah richards (who suffers from similar issues) or is a less risky signing than anyone from abroad who may not adapt to the PL.

I don't see him as a bad footballer or a bad defender I don't think he has played enough yet to warrant that tag (59 prem games). Also Jamie Carragher has got away with being a bad footballer for years and he provided some good memories when he popped up to score against Villa in the 4-4 thriller a while back.

Be more positive people....

Pompey can't have incoming players at the moment, even loans - hence why O'Hara is back with us.

As for signing Kaboul - my first thought is - god no. But then you look at who Harry has signed so far, and i was fairly underwhelmed by the arrival of: Bassong, Niko and Crouch - yet they have become key members of our team and all 3 have contributed to our current league position of 4th.

I know we had a season under Jol where we sat in 4th for most of the season, but back then there was less fierce competition from other clubs for that 4th spot.

Therefore whatever Harry is doing is right by me, and so should be allowed to bring in whichever players he deems necessary.

I would imagine as well that the other key factor to bringing Kaboul back is money - given Pompey still owe us for him, i think we could end uyp with a very good deal - it's almost worth imagining that we just loaned him to Pompey for a season and a half to get experience and he's coming back a better player and we've made a few quid on the whole thing.
