Cheers for the update, yiddio.

Going to be interesting to see exactly how the likes of Ole Gibbsy and Spurs Viola come into this thread and phrase their inevitable claims that you don't know what you're talking about with regards to Gio because it doesn't fit in with their already made-up minds on him...

An interesting take on this by someone who lives in Spain (from COYS poster Barry Mead). You can take it or leave it as you like:

QUOTE(Eric Watters @ Jan 28 2010, 07:18 PM)

"Giovani to Gala - jets off on most weekends to barcelona to go on fancy nights out with ronaldinho and others. comes back late and overweight. tried to get his weight down and get him focussed, but given up now. harry hoping turkey will teach him some lessons, but doubtful and reckons he's off in the summer."

Assuming report is correct (imo nothing we did not know or guess anyway) can those who could not comprehend Gio being left out now see where HR is coming from?

Eric it's a lot of bollocks mate, Ronaldinho lives in Milan now, he is hardly likely to go flying off to Barca and out on the town the night before a serie a game to meet up with Gio and maybe a few Barca players who have to play that day, get trashed then fly back to Milan in time for kick off

Believe me if they were out in Barca it would be in the papers, but there's nothing, it's farcical to suggest it. He may get out on the town a bit, but this is just so much nonsense and raises questions as to why people have to make this stuff up. Maybe the lad has turned over a new leaf as Harry suggested some weeks back but having no excuse for loaning him out maybe this kind of rumour is spread. If it hadn't been so ridiculous it might have been believable

Good example of people reading ITK a little too literally. Obviously they're not going to be going to Barcelona EVERY weekend. But it isn't a huge leap of faith to suggest that they go out every once in a while (once a month, perhaps). Combined with the miserable weather over Christmas, perhaps that turned into three trips in consecutive weeks (as an example) over Yuletide. Chums given half a chance to meet up and get blotto can always find a way.

Even if it is oncly occasional, I still feel Harry has a fair shout for not bending over backwards to accommodate a player who has not shown brilliance or complete dedication for the club (regardless of potential). Whether he would do the same if Modric were the player in question is a different discussion.

On the ITK itself, remember this is reported speech and people in conversation (especially those conversations that are 'off the record' and not expected to be quoted) tend towards the hyperbolic or stress comments. The listener also isn't going to have remembered it verbatim, so will write a 'jist' of the chat. Us rabid animals then hear words like "jet off" and "drinking buddies" and form a picture of permanent inebriation and disorder. He's an athlete, so that isn't going to be true. But the very fact it happens at all is concern enough for me, and I suspect BAR too.

So maybe the other player POTL was refering to in the Begovic thread was David James? Either would be good as number 2s imo. If James is so desperate to join then maybe we can keep him happy as number 2.

Shame about Giovani, but i always knew there was something up with him. We know he has the talent, but he needs the right attitude. I mentioned in the GDS thread about Barca selling him with Deco and Ronaldinho (the other party boys). I'm not sure Rijkaard will sort him out though, afterall it was his regime that was scrapped when Guardiola took over.

rijkaards idea of a training session...

come in hungover from a night in carpe diem or catwalk. 15 minutes on excercise bike and a massage. seriously ronaldinho and deco barely trained

and look at sport or el mundo deportivo. They have photos of Ronaldinho trashed about 4 times since christmas.

On a saturday or sunday night if you want to meet Ronaldinho chances are he is in the Irish sailing club in Porto Olimpico or Carpe diem later in the evening.

Can't help thinking that if it's true that Bostock doesn't like taking advice from lower division managers then that's very likely the attitude that made him decide to leave Palace and come to us in the first place. Perhaps he just needs a bigger challenge.

believe what you will, it comes from a source as good as you can get. i think bill's hit the nail on the head here. obviously they don't go to barcelona every weekend, that wouldn't be possible. as people have said - ronaldinho may play for ac milan but still spends a lot of time in barcelona. giovani may play for tottenham hotspur but still spends a lot of time in barcelona. barca wanted him out because he was following in the (bad) footsteps of ronaldinho - why is it so hard to believe that he's still doing it now?

and he won't look overweight as overweight for a footballer will be a matter of pounds not stone!

as of today the deal hadn't been completed... its just formalities, but its not actually gone through yet, that's why it's not been announced. Levy isn't best pleased with Harry for telling the press about G, K & B!

Also, to those who said pompey couldn't loan more than 1 of our players because you can only loan one player from a club in the same division.... bolton now have weiss from citeh and wilshere from the scum. so obviously that rule isn't being enforced anymore.

Finally, a voice of reason, imo. How can so many people be so gullible, just because they want to believe the official line?

Bill_Oddie may be closer to the truth about occasional visits by Gio to Barcelona. Remember, his younger brother lives and plays there (more chance of Jonathan playing at Barca than Gio at Spurs...). Gio knows he is not going to be involved even from the bench by Harry, so is it such a big crime that he goes to Barca after the Spurs game at the weekend to see his younger brother? And of course they are going to go to a restaurant/bar after the game there - which doesn't mean getting drunk every time they go out.

To suggest that Ronaldinho is using every opportunity to get partying in Barca is frankly, ludicrous. His much improved form and much leaner figure this season points to the opposite - although I would not be surprised if Ronny still lets off steam once in a while.

Somehow, the golfing trip and piss-up in Dublin with 16 mainly British players and more than one reports of jolly nights out for Crouchy, Jenas, Woody et al did not result in any meaningful measures from Harry or outcries of "now we know" from many people here.

But give us a rumour (because that's all it is, a juicy gossippy rumour) about Gio "jetting off to Barca to get pissed and come back 2 stones fatter" and we are nodding our heads in recognition of long-suspected "fact", aren't we.

I have to agree with Barry Mead that the more likely scenario is that Harry closed doors to Gio some time ago and being a stubborn old-fashioned gaffer does not want or cannot change his views there. Using the well placed rumours and media leaks have been part of Harry's game since a long time ago.
