On COYS peanut has said us and Arsenal are in talks with Jan Vertonghen

Hope we can persuade him to sign!

I would think he would go to arsenal and be with his compatriot.

I know both clubs operate with an effective cap (but no hard cap), but isn't theirs still much higher than ours due to the stadium and consistent CUL? Everything being equal with Champions League next year, my concern would be that we couldn't match their offer.

He would be superb.

Caulker will also provide healthy competition for him and Kaboul.

JJ seems confident about our talks with him in another thread

Arsenal will pay him more, Arsenal currently in pole for 3rd, he will be forming a partnership with his mate Vermaelen. No chance.

Would he be first choice at Arsenal though - what about the likes of Mertsacker ? Would he be more likely to be played as their LB and is that something which he would want as his main position (rather than as a back up position). Playing time could be a downside to him joining Arsenal, so it might not be a clear cut decision for him

I doubt he (PM) will be first choice at Arsenal in the future. He was a very poor premiership player.

Once he got injured against Sunderland and Vermaelen and Koscielny got back together, they went on their good run.

Pretty sure I read they're trying to offload Mertesacker

He has more chance of first team action with us and he will be able to play in his favoured position with Kaboom along side him

I'd say he has as much chance of being part of the first choice CB pairing at Arsenal as he does with us.

Looking forward to Caulker returning, but Vertonghen is quality, can also play at left back and in midfield....

everyone raving about caulker.. but the lad is what not even 20 years old... send him out on loan again next year at premier level or even back at swansea. why not? he wont get games at spurs next season so let him develop elsewhere till we have no choice but to take him back... he will come back better player for it

with regards verthongthen.. money talks and bullshit walks. nothing else.

Vermealen & Konch whatever his name is have had a good second half of the season and have now developed a good understanding.......Wenger likes that and very rarely changes it.

Yea but I think if Wenger is wanting to bring the guy in for big money he will be doing so looking to start him as the first choice alongside Vermealen

He could equally look at us and think with Kaboul looking good, Dawson an England international and think if either or both of King and Gallas remain fit next season I might struggle to get games if I don't start off well.

I am not sure over all Arsenal would look a more daunting situation for him than ourselves in terms of establishing himself as part of the first choice CB pairing.
