I generally despise the goat option, but I've gone for it in this case, as neither of the options appeal to me. Comparing Modric and Van der Vaart is, in my opinion, like comparing Corluka and King.
When Modric first signed, I was lead to believe that his best postion was in the Van der Vaart role; just off the #9. However, a few months of watching Luka play quickly convinced me that, in order to get the most of out of the little fella, you need him on the ball as much as possible, preferably from the middle of the park. Even when he started on the left the season-before-last, he'd generally drift inside.
Modric is busy. He dictates the play, and has the ability to alter the tempo. Van der Vaart is much more calculating, picking up the play between the lines, and instantly aiming for that killer ball, clever pass, or strike at goal.
I fully expect to see both names on the team-sheet week after week.
