Defoe joins a growing list of athletes who have shown huge signs of improvement in their game after switching to a vegan diet. His company includes the likes of Novak Djokovic, the Williams sisters, the Diaz brothers and David Haye. Aguero stopped getting injured so much and had his two best goalscoring seasons in the Premier League after turning vegetarian, whereas Messi whilst not strictly vegan, switched to a predominantly vegan diet a couple of years ago.

Like when Wenger first came to England twenty years ago and made his players stop boozing and eating pies and burgers, there is going to be a manager in the not too distant future who gets his players to switch to a vegan diet and wins the league. You heard it here first...

I'm sure this is all well and good and scientifically proven etc etc, but if someone gave me the choice of a life of riches and success as a multi-millionaire footballer on a vegan diet, or a bacon sandwich....I'd be reaching for the HP without a second thought.

Does Javier Mascherano count as a vegetable then?

Nicky Hollender, celebrity trainer and high profile Spurs fan (and ex footballer), is vegan.

He's in great shape so the vegan diet can't be that bad.

Defoe on the Mascherano diet was a frustrating player who couldn't hold down a first team spot with us or in the England team even though he should have been in his physical prime. Now now on the vegan diet there's a five page thread on this board debating if we should re-sign him aged 34...

Wenger didn't actually stop his players from boozing and eating pies and burgers. He just sold Paul Merson, which made the whole squad look healthier.

Nothing to do with him playing for us at the time rather than an utter shit Sunderland team then..
