Villa agree Sidwell fee

Midfielder set to leave Chelsea for £5.5million

Aston Villa have agreed a £5.5million deal for Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell.

The former Reading star only moved to Stamford Bridge last summer on a free transfer, but he was unable to force a regular place in Chelsea's first XI.

And after only seven Premier League starts for the Blues, Sidwell has been offered a move to Villa Park.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill is keen to bolster his small squad as he attempts to build a side capable of a top-six Premier League finish next season.

But, Sidwell, 25, could also be viewed as a possible replacement for Villa captain Gareth Barry, who is a transfer target of Liverpool.

This is the kind of thing I do on Football Manager! good bit of business for Chelsea in total (I still f**king hate them!).. signed him for free last summer, now a year later selling him for £5.5mil!! Sidwell was stupid agreeing to join Chelsea at first!! :duh:

I wonder how much Sidwell bagged in that year? 7 starts and 8 sub appearances and probably on 30k a week for that. I wonder if Bridge and SWP will ever leave Chelski due to their ridiculous wages.

It's a f**king ridiculous price for a very average player. But that's what happens with English players - you pluck a sum out of the sky and then double it and add a million quid.

Sidwell looked decent, but hardly world class for Reading. He did nothing for Chelsea except underwhelm and sit on the bench. A foreign player with the equivalent experience would have sold for about £2 million.

I think people get carried away with this thing about over paying for English player. Tey buying a decent player from Portugal at the moment. We paid £8 million for Zokora and £5.4 million for KPB and they are both foreign and have had nothing like the impact on the Prem that Sidwell had the season before last. Would either of those 2 get many games for Chelsea? I really can't see them playing instead of Ballack, Obi, Makelele, Essien or Lampard. It's likley that Sidwell will play more games for Villa than Petrov and he was foreign and cost £7 million.

Good signing for Villa.

Decent signing for Villa, affirming their mediocre status as he won't take them on to a higher level, especially if Barry goes too... Good signing for us I sez.

Yeah average player, average signing. If he's meant to be Barry's replacement, then even better for teams around Villa, including us.

Good player - provides good engine, leadership skills, tough tackling as well as his fair share of goals.

Can't understand why people don't seem to rate him as I certainly wouldn't have minded if he had ended up at Spurs!

He's a very good player. Better than NRC imo.

<puke>I read that he was on £2million a year at Chelsea</puke>

I read on sky sports before that although Cech was on £50k, Sidwell was on £55k a week, which is on average almost £2.9m a year: around £200k per performance!

Good signing for Villa.

I agree, but how they can put that price tag i don't know, no doubt trying to recoup some of his rediculous wages over the last year.

Heard the SWP is out the door soon too. I wish more players of his quality would look elsewhere instead of sitting on the bench for silly money. What a waiste of talent!:bang:
