Tottenham Hotspur target Franck Kessie has put off a number of clubs with his financial demands and few teams are prepared to meet his wage requests at present.

He's bought the right to hold out for big money by not signing a contract and the pay increase that would have gone with it.

Whether anyone bites at the money he's asking for will be interesting. I'd expect he'll meet in the middle somewhere but I have a feeling it will be too rich for us. Based on nothing but baseless negativity I have built up from being disappointed by my unrealistic expectations ?

I'm sure if Newcastle are still in the Prem they will shower him with all the cash he wants.

Could probably even stretch to giving him a house with a golden shower if he's that way inclined :sneaky:

I think a few years ago it was rare for a player to run down their contract so when they did there was a sense that a higher wage was offset by not having to pay a transfer fee but as it has become more common that has changed.
While clubs may be willing to pay a premium on the wages, because that's the major selling point to win the signature, they are not prepared to go overboard to match a mythical transfer value.
For my money whatever Jessie wants is too much he ain't worth it.

I agree about the transfer fee. For clubs that don't have near endless supplies of cash, the transfer fee is an investment and sell-on value has to be taken into account.

I can't think of any cases of a player being signed on a free then sold for any real profit. So yes, the salary will be higher on a free transfer but as the club won't be making a profit on the sale it is not necessarily a cheap deal.

The wages will be high on a free but if players go silly with their demands then only the mega rich will come in.

My concern with us paying out on Kessie will be the length of the contract. If we get him on a 2 year deal then great, but we don't want an underperforming player stuck here on a long contract.

Nailed it, just look at you know who.
Really can’t see DL paying out massive wages again to an incoming player even if they are a free transfer, especially if they haven’t played in the PL before unless there are performance and milestone bonuses that form part of the deal.
If a player is motivated enough then they shouldn’t have a problem with that as opposed to just saying they want £450k a week then not performing on the pitch. Just look at Ramsey at inter.

Probably more likely to end up at a doped club anyway. It's a shame FFP has turned out to be so lame and ineffective.
