Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has apologised to a nine-year-old football fan after he broke his wrist with a stray shot.
Jamie Thomas, from Wem in Shropshire, was watching Manchester United for the first time at Wolves on Sunday when the shot hit his arm during the warm-up.
Rooney said on Twitter: "I want to apologise to Jamie Thomas.
"I have arranged for a letter and a signed shirt to be sent to his home address."
It is not thought that Rooney was aware of the incident at the time.
Jamie's father, Andy, said the injury happened when Rooney and Javier Hernandez were taking shots at goal. Rooney missed the target and the ball headed towards Jamie.
He put out his hands to stop it hitting him and it broke his wrist.
Thomas Sr told the Shropshire Star: "It shook him up a bit but he's fine about it now and I don't think it's put him off going to other games.
"I don't think Rooney realised what he had done, otherwise I am sure he would have come over."
Hernandez scored twice in the match as United went on to win 5-0 .

I usually think he's a bit of an idiot, but this was clearly an accident and at least he's done something decent in sending the boy a shirt.

He's arranged for a letter? That sounds really pompous to me for some reason. Autograph and T-shirt isn't gonna help this kid crack one out is it?
*Goes back to article to see if kid is too young to imply he masturbates*
*Sees kid is 9*
*Sticks with implication*

Seen Ferdinand boot the ball in frustration towards the advertising board during a game and smash a woman straight in the face. He didn't bat an eyelid. Far worse than Rooney here.

The crowd are close to the pitch, it's gonna happen from time to time. A free shirt, worth £40 or more is not to be sniffed at.

I remember Klinsmann hitting a stray shot before kick off during the warm up which smacked a lady in her forties directly in the face and bloodied her nose badly

She appeared to be on the verge of being knocked out and the stewards took her behind the scenes for treatment.

Interestingly enough her two young sons (no older than 5-6) both refused to go with their mum and instead demanding to stay and watch the game. A steward was then forced to sit next to them until their mum came back (which was not until the second half) and never once did the children appear to wonder where their mum was or if she was ok.

Ferdinand apologised straight away and met the lady after the game with a bunch of flowers etc.

I always wanted to be hit by the ball when I go to the game but it never happened. Fancied doing an amazing save or heading it back but in reality I would have just got cleaned out! Think its a nice gesture by Rooney btw and the kid will be happy I'm sure.

VdV did similar this season warming up, he pelted the ball at goal, missed and it hit a girl in the crowd, he climbed into the crowd and went to see her and apologized, she also got some tickets and a signed shirt if i remember rightly.

Luka Modric almost took my head off two seasons ago with a shoot. All I had to show for it afterwards was some touchline paint on my cheek.

The kids probably really happy with a shirt and a letter from Rooney. He's probably a celebrity at his school now.

If anything the kid should be sending a thank you letter to Rooney - he's made him famous now - he'll be "it" at his school ;)

Yeah he's going to get his pick of all the tail at his school.

You know, sometime next year when he's old enough...

I saw Jesper Gronkjaer knock a woman the fuck out during the warm-up of a Spurs-Chelsea game at WHL years ago, when he was practicing free-kicks.

He blatantly saw it and just walked off.

Why are the Daily Mail not all over this?

"EXCLUSIVE: ROONEY ATTACKS NINE YEAR OLD BOY"

He should be strung up for this. Animal.

I always worry about the safety of the wheelchair users sat by the pitch (well not 'always' - extremely infrequently actually).

They're in the firing line not just of stray passes, but also of players over-running and hitting them. You see some of them with no arms or legs and they look like sitting ducks.
